As one who grew up and came to faith outside the Covenant, I have always been glad for the home I’ve found here. But I have never been more excited to be a part of the Evangelical Covenant Church than when I first heard of the Covenant Kids Congo (CKC) powered by World Vision initiative. After first hearing about CKC, I went back and shared with our church council and they were on board from the start, in fact donating a tithe of a recent estate gift we had received to start-up costs for CKC.
Late last spring we offered a class based on The Hole in Our Gospel written by Richard Stearns, president of World Vision US, to help build momentum at ECC Lafayette. In late August, we will kick off our upcoming Christian Formation year with a celebration, picnic, and games, with an important piece being a dunk tank where attenders can throw a baseball and dunk the pastors to raise more money for CKC.
Throughout 2012 we have been challenging our people with the theme “The Year of Living Dangerously” – that is, this is to be a year of stepping out in faith, going deeper in Christ and further in mission; experiencing the fullness of life God offers us in Christ Jesus. Covenant Kids Congo fits perfectly into this emphasis for us and I am excited about our Hope Sunday, coming up in mid-October. My leaders, staff, and I are hopeful that what we begin with our Hope Sunday will play a part in the spiritual, physical, and social transformation of the Congo, and we are thankful for the opportunity to take part!
