Vikings Soccer Upends Dominican, Football Team Wins

CHICAGO, IL (September 9, 2011) – North Park University’s men’s soccer and football teams posted impressive victories this past weekend. Meanwhile, the women’s soccer and volleyball teams struggled.

The soccer team pulled out a 2-0 upset victory over No. 7-ranked Dominican University in non-conference action Sunday night.

In a contest that saw a combined 10 yellow cards, North Park used the momentum of its more than 430 cheering fans to defeat the Stars for the second in the last three years. Dominican won the other two contests during that period.

Sophomore Robin Hals scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the 20th minute off an assist from freshman Jonas Petterson. Petterson then tallied the second goal, his second of the season in the 63rd minute unassisted.

Despite being out-shot 16-6, including 10-3 in the second half, North Park controlled the pace of the game and came up with some strong defensive stops throughout.

The Vikings (2-0) return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday when they host Concordia University Chicago.

The North Park football team opened the 2011 season with a solid 34-9 victory over host Aurora University in non-conference action last Saturday afternoon.

North Park garnered 431 yards of total offense and collected 18 first downs in the victory.

Sophomore quarterback Tyler Krebs rushed for three touchdowns and threw for one as he racked up 203 yards rushing on 24 carries. Krebs found sophomore John Barnabee for an 80-yard TD score, giving the Vikings a 27-3 advantage with 8:01 left in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, senior Casey Smagala recorded seven tackles, while both junior Andrew Saltzman and freshman Kyle Leibforth had four tackles each. Junior Tony Kebede connected on field goals of 20 and 34 yards and four PATs in the victory as well.

North Park (1-0) returns to action Saturday when it travels to Benedictine University in Lisle for a 7 p.m. contest with the Eagles.

The North Park women’s soccer team played to a 0-0, two-overtime tie with non-conference opponent Oberlin College Sunday afternoon. An offsides call negated a goal scored in early overtime.

The Vikings (1-1-1) return to action at 7 p.m. Friday (tomorrow) when they travel to University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for a 7 p.m.

The volleyball team finished with a 1-3 record at the Green Hornet Invite, hosted by Kalamazoo College in Michigan.

After losing the opener to Wooster College in four sets, the Vikings rebounded for a 15-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-17 victory over Franklin College behind a 33-assist performance from freshman Aurora Johansen. Sophomore Shelby Switzer threw down a team-high 15 kills, while sophomore Tricia Ivanoff had 11.

Four different Vikings finished in double-figure digs led by 23 from sophomore Danielle Waldvogel. Junior Jessica Holmes added 19, while sophomore Julia Bakken had 12 and Johansen finished with 11.

Through five matches, Switzer leads the team with a 3.59 kills per set average. Johansen owns a team-best 6.88 assists per set average, and Waldvogel has come up with 100 digs, for a 5.88 digs per set average.
