He is expected to remain in the hospital for at least another week, says Robert Owens, superintendent of the Southeast Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church. He has been in daily contact with John Perkins Jr.
“He’s stable and talking,” Owens says.
Perkins has been a frequent partner with the Evangelical Covenant Church for reconciliation projects as well as a speaker multiple times at North Park University and at denominational events.
He was a main speaker during the 2011 Midwinter Conference and told the gathering of pastors that, “Some people have problems dealing with justice. It’s sort of a ‘tack-on’ to the gospel for many. We are justified by Christ’s sacrifice. The gospel is an explanation of God’s justice and how he went about the redemption process. This just God justified you and me and loves all of us equally.” Click here to watch the video of his sermon.
Perkins was scheduled to co-lead a workshop at the Midwinter Conference next week with Jean Thomas, the founder and president of the Haiti Christian Development Fund. Thomas will continue to lead the workshop. Thomas has studied under and been a long-time colleague of Perkins.
Perkins is the founder of the John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation & Development as well as the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA).
The Covenant is a member of the CCDA, which has grown into a network of more than 700 organizations across the world.
