{"id":995,"date":"2011-11-19T10:46:29","date_gmt":"2011-11-19T15:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/?p=995"},"modified":"2011-11-19T10:55:07","modified_gmt":"2011-11-19T15:55:07","slug":"the-wise-but-unfortunate-owl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/?p=995","title":{"rendered":"The Wise but Unfortunate Owl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If an owl showed up in your yard would you think:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 it&#8217;s a sign that our home is blessed with wisdom<br \/>\n2.\u00a0 it&#8217;s a sign that our home is cursed with disease or death<br \/>\n3.\u00a0 it&#8217;s a sign that our home is infested with mice enough to feed the owl?<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in Europe or N. America we associate the owl with wisdom.\u00a0 Just look at the wise counsel given by owls in the Disney movies alone:\u00a0 Sleeping Beauty, Winnie the Pooh, Fox and the Hound, Sword and the Stone, and\u00a0Bambi to name a few.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However on this continent, owls are traditionally seen as a bad omen and are cause for fear.\u00a0 An owl perched on your gate or making its home in your attic is believed to be\u00a0an indication that someone in your home will soon fall sick and may even\u00a0die.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In years past, while living in Central African Republic, we had owls in the attic.\u00a0 They made a lot of noise over our heads every night causing no illness or death, just lack of a solid night of sleep.\u00a0 Eventually Ron plugged up all the holes from the attic to the outside and thwarted further entry to any owls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Owls have provided our kids with hours of entertainment &#8212; when we found a stash of owl pellets in an unused building near that home in Central African Republic a few years back.\u00a0 They loved cutting open the pellets\u00a0and identifying tiny bones, skulls etc of the eaten\u00a0prey.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago when Ron went over to the Wycliffe Center to pick up our van from the repair shop (that&#8217;s a subject for another post someday), he found an owl on the ground under a tree.\u00a0 It must have fallen out of the tree in one of the last storms of rainy season the night before.\u00a0 So Ron picked it up and brought it home.\u00a0 One eye was damaged, but it did turn its head to watch a person pass by.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_996\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-996\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/11\/2011-11-owl-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-996\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/11\/2011-11-owl-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/11\/2011-11-owl-1.jpg 490w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/11\/2011-11-owl-1-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hopeful that with some TLC the injured owl would survive<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Having no knowledge of the care and feeding of\u00a0wild owls, we wrote to our\u00a0missionary vet friend, and turned to the internet.\u00a0 After doing everything wrong at first, we learned\u00a0not to try to give it water, not to handle it much as the\u00a0stimulation\u00a0may be too stressful.\u00a0 Finally Ron took the bird out to RFIS in a cage, covered in a towel to keep it warm.\u00a0 At least there it was out of the noise of the city.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_998\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-998\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/11\/2011-11-owl-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-998\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/11\/2011-11-owl-21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/11\/2011-11-owl-21.jpg 490w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/11\/2011-11-owl-21-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-998\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Warm and dry place for Owl to recover<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sadly, the owl did not survive, but he was kept comfortable in the final days of his life.\u00a0 And now he has the priviledge of donating himself to the Advanced Placement Biology Class for study.\u00a0 I mean, the owl doesn&#8217;t get to study but will be studied.\u00a0 And in this case the only death he came to announce was his own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur?moderation_action=report_form&object_type=post&object_id=995&width=250&height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If an owl showed up in your yard would you think: 1.\u00a0 it&#8217;s a sign that our home is blessed with wisdom 2.\u00a0 it&#8217;s a sign that our home is cursed with disease or death 3.\u00a0 it&#8217;s a sign that our home is infested with mice enough to feed the owl?
