Partnership has been a keyword in missions for several years.\u00a0 Partnership with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds is challenging.\u00a0 And sometimes\u00a0even people from the same country\u00a0come from different cultural backgrounds.\u00a0\u00a0For example, Cameroonian colleagues may\u00a0belong to\u00a0different people groups with very different customs.\u00a0 \u00a0American missionaries coming from the Midwest, the East Coast, African American or Hispanic American backgrounds\u00a0are culturally diverse.\u00a0 So while we have the same goals\u00a0and mission, we will not approach the work, make decisions\u00a0or deal with conflict\u00a0the same\u00a0way.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wycliffe and their linguistic organization SIL here in Yaounde\u00a0offered a seminar on multicultural team training last week.\u00a0 For 4 days we discussed a different topic each day, along with corresponding Bible Study and Case Study from real life.\u00a0Topics included:\u00a0 kindom work, communication & conflict, leadership, and the challenge of resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Each day the\u00a0seminar began with a\u00a0lecture on DVD\u00a0by anthropoligist\u00a0Sherwood Lingenfelter in which he brought out the biblical perspective on day’s\u00a0the topic.\u00a0 Then we read case studies and discussed\u00a0questions in groups or in pairs.<\/p>\n

Interestingly the number of participants allowed\u00a0each missionary\u00a0to be paired off with a Cameroonian who is working in ministry here with the Cameroonian Bible Translation & Literacy Association (CABTAL).\u00a0 It made for great discussions!\u00a0 Hopefully, just knowing the types of misunderstandings that can happen among\u00a0team members with varied cultural backgrounds\u00a0will help us to be more effective in our ministry partnerships here.<\/p>\n
