clothes, and headed out the door, albiet a few minutes early so they can stop and get local donuts called &#8220;begniets&#8221; (pronounced BEN-yayz).\u00a0\u00a0But Ben and\u00a0I got to stay home as it&#8217;s a full day off for the Parent Run School (PRS).\u00a0 And the preparations for the big evening feast\u00a0began.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_455\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-455\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/chicken-frozen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-455\" title=\"chicken frozen\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/chicken-frozen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-455\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">10 kg block of frozen chicken legs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0Actually\u00a0preparations had begun the week before.\u00a0 Turkey is not\u00a0a game bird found in Africa &#8211; I&#8217;m not even sure imported ones are sold here, so\u00a0I ordered a 10 kilo\u00a0box of frozen chicken legs.\u00a0 My first concern was &#8230; &#8220;where to keep 10k of frozen chicken?&#8221;\u00a0 See, my freezer already\u00a0was quite full.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Freezer full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/Freezer-full.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"164\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the day I picked up the box of legs, we had visitors stop by from Central African Republic.\u00a0 They were going back to CAR the weekend before Thanksgiving, so I quickly texted Covenant missionary colleague Aleta Danforth who lives and works in Gamboula, CAR.\u00a0 Thrilled at the ability to text to another country within Africa, I was equally thrilled to get her response &#8211; they&#8217;d love to split the box with us!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So I gave away the frozen\u00a0dinner rolls,\u00a0took the ice cream leftover from Nathan&#8217;s birthday\u00a0out of the freezer and shared it with Mary and Ruthie Noren, thawed the legs enough to separate them and bagged them up and squeezed them into my freezer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The night before Thanksgiving<em>\u00a0<\/em>I got started on major preparations\u00a0by making a cheesecake, which Ron likes on special holidays.\u00a0 Lacking Philadelphia Cream Cheese, we used 25 squares of Kiri cheese spread.\u00a0 And lacking Honey Graham crackers, we used Glucose cookies (biscuits) for kids.\u00a0 As in Europe, vanilla comes in sugar form.\u00a0 And not finding any sour cream, we used plain yogurt for the topping.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_440\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-440\" style=\"width: 281px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/Pie-chsck-b4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-440 \" title=\"Pie chsck b4\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/Pie-chsck-b4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-440\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ingredients for cheesecake include (clockwise) sugar, Kiri cheese, yogurt, eggs, vanilla sugar, and cookies<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_443\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-443\" style=\"width: 247px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/pie-chsck-aftr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-443 \" title=\"pie chsck aftr\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/pie-chsck-aftr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"247\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-443\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freshly baked cheesecake<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_442\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-442\" style=\"width: 246px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/pie-pumpkin-b4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-442 \" title=\"pie pumpkin b4\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/pie-pumpkin-b4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"246\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ingredients for pumpkin pie include the usual spices, and some local substitutes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0Also the day before we cooked up a squash that was found growing wild\u00a0out at the RFIS property.\u00a0 Edna cooked it up, I mixed it in the blender with the usual spices I&#8217;d brought from Grand Rapids (as you can see by the Meijer brand cornstarch).\u00a0 For evaporated milk we learned of a way to make it using powdered whole\u00a0milk (Nido).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">First thing Thursday morning, after getting a load of laundry in the machine, I got out the blended pie filling and Mary Noren brought over a crust.\u00a0 So thankful for the Norens as neighbors.\u00a0 Mary was making an apple pie,\u00a0 so she made me an extra crust!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_441\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-441\" style=\"width: 221px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/pie-pumpkin-aftr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-441 \" title=\"pie pumpkin aftr\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/pie-pumpkin-aftr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baked pumpkin pie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0What I&#8217;m really excited about in the whole pie making process is the great find while shopping on Wednesday.\u00a0 Trying out a new store with my friend Lori, I found glass 9&#8243; pie pans!\u00a0 No big deal in the US, but it&#8217;s something I have never found in any African store before, and I&#8217;m not sure how I would have made these pies without them!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">While the oven was hot, we made up a batch of granola, Nathan&#8217;s #1 breakfast choice, we go through it quickly.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_444\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-444\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/vet-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-444 \" title=\"vet 1\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/vet-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-444\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L. to R. vet&#39;s intern, our yard guy, Sammy, vet&#39;s assistant<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">When the first\u00a0laundry load\u00a0was hanging, and 2nd load in the machine,\u00a0dough for rolls was\u00a0rising, and granola baking, the doorbell rang.\u00a0 It was Ben&#8217;s friend, here to play &#8211; and right behind him came the vet&#8217;s assistant who has been coming to\u00a0check on our poor sick\u00a0puppy every day this week.\u00a0 She&#8217;s gotten a series of injections and is now on antibiotics.\u00a0 We&#8217;re so thankful for a caring vet for our puppy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\" style=\"text-align: left\">Shortly after that, the landlady came by to inspect the work on our septic tank (that&#8217;s another story &#8211; check out the next post for that saga).\u00a0 Briefly, the external work was ok, but they were supposed to do some plumming in the kitchen and bathroom, but didn&#8217;t come for 2 days.\u00a0 She left raving about having the guy responsible\u00a0\u00a0locked up.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_452\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-452\" style=\"width: 166px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/plummer-kitchen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-452\" title=\"plummer kitchen\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/11\/plummer-kitchen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"166\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plummer working on the kitchen sink <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Ron, having just returned home from work early with the kids (school got out a couple hours early on this American\u00a0holiday), called a real plummer.\u00a0 Polycarp is a man who has done work in many homes in the missionary community and is a\u00a0well respected professional.\u00a0 By the time he arrived the 3rd load of laundry was hanging on the line, chicken was out of the oven and I was working on the gravy.\u00a0 The 2 of us worked side by side in the kitchen until it was time to go to the home of Jeff &amp;
