{"id":366,"date":"2010-10-17T09:28:36","date_gmt":"2010-10-17T14:28:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/?p=366"},"modified":"2010-10-17T09:28:36","modified_gmt":"2010-10-17T14:28:36","slug":"whiskey-and-missionaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/?p=366","title":{"rendered":"Whiskey and Missionaries?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/10\/peanut-bottle-mt-small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-365 aligncenter\" title=\"peanut bottle mt small\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/10\/peanut-bottle-mt-small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"490\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0What is the meaning of this?!\u00a0 Empty bottles of whiskey in the home of missionaries?\u00a0 It seems every missionary home from Congo to Cameroon has whiskey bottles like this!\u00a0 What lushes!\u00a0 Has culture shock made them go completely bonkers?\u00a0 Do they need alcohol to cope?\u00a0 Have they been influenced by those to whom they&#8217;ve gone to minister?\u00a0 What&#8217;s the deal?<\/p>\n<p>Actually, the bottles are just &#8220;packaging&#8221; for the best peanuts you&#8217;d ever want to eat!\u00a0 Women soak peanuts in salt water, dry them and roast them.\u00a0 Then, to package them for sale, they put them into\u00a0bottles.\u00a0 A 750 ml bottle of\u00a0\u00a0peanuts goes for about $1.50 to $2.00.\u00a0\u00a0 When we lived in Congo (Zaire) we used to use the empty bottles\u00a0to\u00a0keep\u00a0drinking water in the fridge &#8211; they fit so nicely in the fridge door.\u00a0 But\u00a0now that plastic\u00a0 water bottles are bigger and\u00a0easily available,\u00a0we &#8220;recycle&#8221; the whiskey bottles,\u00a0returning the empties\u00a0to the sellers so they can\u00a0fill them\u00a0again with yummy peanuts.<\/p>\n<p>One does wonder &#8211; who IS drinking all this whiskey to get empty bottles in the first place?\u00a0 Well, not us.\u00a0 And hopefully not the women we buy the peanuts from either.\u00a0 So if you visit a missionary in Africa, or see photos of their dining table and notice whiskey bottles, be assured that\u00a0they were\u00a0purchased for the peanuts they contained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/10\/peanuts-small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-367\" title=\"peanuts small\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2010\/10\/peanuts-small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur?moderation_action=report_form&object_type=post&object_id=366&width=250&height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0What is the meaning of this?!\u00a0 Empty bottles of whiskey in the home of missionaries?\u00a0 It seems every missionary home from Congo to Cameroon has whiskey bottles like this!\u00a0 What lushes!\u00a0 Has culture shock made them go completely bonkers?\u00a0 Do they need alcohol to cope?\u00a0 Have they been influenced by those to whom they&#8217;ve gone&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":65,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[190],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-366","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cameroon-life"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Whiskey and Missionaries?
