Ashia!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since about\u00a0the end of\u00a0August my back pain and resulting leg pain was getting worse.\u00a0 So I contacted Dr. Sparks,\u00a0a missionary\u00a0doctor whose children attend RFIS, to find out my options for treatment here.\u00a0 He\u00a0replied that if physical therapy didn&#8217;t work, my only option is &#8220;The West&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0So, at his recommendation, I\u00a0went to the Mbingo Baptist Hospital in the NW Region of Cameroon (about 8 hours drive from home) \u00a0to see a visiting American orthopedic (bone) doctor who knows about backs.\u00a0 He recommended 2 weeks of physical therapy.\u00a0 So that&#8217;s where I was\u00a0Sept. 9-22&#8230; afraid that I&#8217;d be told to return to USA for surgery, afraid of being alone and lonely in a hospital room with no one to care for me (at that point I could not bend at all, so getting dressed was even difficult).\u00a0 And I was not looking forward to being away from my\u00a0family, and\u00a0having my work load pile up in my absence.\u00a0\u00a0 I am so grateful to so many friends and family who prayed for me during this time.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Very soon all my fears were relieved.\u00a0 God is good,\u00a0 no, amazing.\u00a0\u00a0 He is able to do exceedingly abundantly more than we ask or imagine.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">I Got Your Back<\/span><br \/>\nI was driven up to Mbingo with Covenant missionary Sharon Davis and\u00a0Sunday, the man\u00a0who often drives her to villages where she does her ministry in\u00a0community development.\u00a0 Using the mission van, I was able to lie down the whole trip, which was easier on my back.\u00a0 Sharon, who lives in Bamenda,\u00a0just under an hour from the hospital, knew the contacts and made arrangements in advance for my stay at the hospital.\u00a0 Before Sharon came to Cameroon, no Covenant missionary had lived and worked outside of Yaounde.\u00a0 As Country Coordinator, I &#8220;had her back&#8221; then,\u00a0helping her work through the administratie\u00a0process that allowed her to live in Bamenda where she had a passion to work with the poor in English speaking villages.\u00a0 And being so near to the hospital, she now\u00a0&#8220;had my back&#8221; too &#8212; arranging for transportation, lodging and meals, and visiting me during my stay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Ashia<\/span>!<br \/>\nOnce we drove up to the hospital entrance and a stretcher was\u00a0brought for me,\u00a0I was wheeled from the registration office to the consultation room and then to the physical therapy dept.\u00a0 People we passed (total strangers to me) would say, &#8220;ashia&#8221; (pronounced AHsh-ya).\u00a0\u00a0This Cameroonian Pidgin\u00a0word is a term of encouragement used to express empathy for\u00a0one&#8217;s pain or sorrow.\u00a0 It is also used to encourage anyone who is in the middle of hard work or a long journey on foot.\u00a0 It really was an encouragement to hear this expression of sympathy from total strangers.\u00a0 As I came upon other patients during my stay, I used that word to encourage them.\u00a0 It brings a smile.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\" style=\"text-align: left\">\n<dl>\n<dt><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/2012-09-Mbingo-hosp-ashia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1514\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/2012-09-Mbingo-hosp-ashia-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/2012-09-Mbingo-hosp-ashia-218x300.jpg 218w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/2012-09-Mbingo-hosp-ashia.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>The Physical Therapy team assist another patient. &#8220;Ashia Mama!&#8221;<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>When I\u00a0got to the consultation office, the first\u00a0good news was when the doctor said surgery would not be needed.\u00a0 The physical therapy department is well trained and they took great care of me.\u00a0 Fredrick, my therapist,\u00a0was helpful, answering all my questions about what was going on in my back, and what each exercise he assigned to me was meant to accomplish.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1509\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1509\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/MBH-PT-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1509\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/MBH-PT-1-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/MBH-PT-1-224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/MBH-PT-1.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1509\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A few of the physical therapy staff. all my meals were taken care of.\u00a0 There is a dining room where excellent Cameroonian cooks provided 3 meals a day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1512\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1512\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/MBH-hostel-kitchen-crew.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1512\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/MBH-hostel-kitchen-crew-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/MBH-hostel-kitchen-crew-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/10\/MBH-hostel-kitchen-crew.jpg 403w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cooks at the hostel dining room<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And to top it off, the first day I met Margaret,\u00a0a nurse who is at Mbingo hospital to study to be a nurse practicioner.\u00a0 Mbingo is a teaching hospital where nurses and doctors are trained.\u00a0 Not only did Margaret and I hit it off from the start, she came to my room to sing and pray with me a few times during my stay.\u00a0 We had some great times of encouraging each other &#8211;
