Bridge BEFORE <\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Today was the day!\u00a0 Total makeover for Odza Bridge. \u00a0In our previous post\u00a0&#8220;Building Bridges (part 1)&#8221; we told you about the needed repairs and how the tree had been cut down and chainsaw cut into lumber specifically for this bridge repair.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This morning workers from RFIS, Assemblies of God mission,\u00a0UBAC and CMF\u00a0hostels gathered with Ron and Reach Global missionary Phil Falconer for a good day of hard and rewarding work.\u00a0\u00a0At the site some\u00a0men from the neighborhood or <em>quartier\u00a0<\/em> joined them too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First step was to remove the old broken and rotting wood from the bridge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1175\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1175\" style=\"width: 403px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/02\/2012-02-Odza-bridge-1.jpg\"><img id=\"caption-attachment-1175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Removal of the old boards from the bridge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This exposed a build up of dirt on the lip of cement that the 4 supporting I-beams rest on.\u00a0 So that had to be cleaned off &#8211; so as not to corrode the I-beams and rot the new wood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/02\/2012-02-Odza-bridge-02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1177\" sub-deck<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once the sub-deck was in place, the next job was to line the boards up along a straight line, and make sure they&#8217;re evenly spaced.<\/p>\n<figure the new sub-deck<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once that was done, everyone had a small break while waiting for the welder\u00a0to arrive.\u00a0 His primary job is with the Assemblies of God mission, welding frames used in the construction of church buildings, or temples.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1182\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1182\" style=\"width: 426px\" class=\"wp-caption the all day job, someone had placed road blocks directing drivers to a detour further up the road on each side of the bridge.\u00a0 And closer to the work site was yet another line of defense &#8211; like this hand written one.\u00a0 However, moto taxis are not easily deterred.\u00a0 One got through, others attempted, but were met with great opposition:\u00a0 Ron.\u00a0 He made it quite clear that crossing the unfinished bridge is unacceptable!<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1186\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1186\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a pieces of angle iron were welded to the I-beams on either side of every 6th board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1188\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1188\" style=\"width: 319px\" id=\"caption-attachment-1188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">welding angle iron to I-beam to secure sub-deck boards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shortly, the welder complained of poor visibility due to the sun shining.\u00a0 Lacking an umbrella or more accurately, parasol, I went in search of shade for him.\u00a0 I struck up a conversation with a woman pounding greens in her yard; she said it was &#8220;kpum&#8221; I think.\u00a0 We brainstormed a minute and then she picked up a machete to cut a banana leaf to shade the work.\u00a0 On the way to the banana tree she noticed a piece of metal\u00a0sheltering her firewood\u00a0and offered it.\u00a0 This is just one example of how ready and willing the local people were to help contribute to this important community followed, nailing the boards to the angle iron.\u00a0\u00a0 Almost as if to prove that God is in even the fine details of this project, glasses fell from his pocket as he worked.\u00a0 Only instead of falling to the dark waters of the river, they (and some medicines) fell onto the board he was nailing.\u00a0 It was evident that many were praying.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1190\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1190\" style=\"width: 302px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2012\/02\/2012-02-Odza-bridge-11.jpg\"><img pounds a piece, this was no small task.\u00a0 The help of many men from the quartier was much appreciated.\u00a0 Once they were\u00a0in place, Ron sawed off the ends to fit the length of the bridge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1191\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1191\" style=\"width: 287px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a wasn&#8217;t there to see it either).\u00a0 And voila!\u00a0 The bridge is done!\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1192\" style=\"width: 383px\"
