{"id":1070,"date":"2011-12-17T15:18:14","date_gmt":"2011-12-17T20:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/?p=1070"},"modified":"2011-12-17T15:28:07","modified_gmt":"2011-12-17T20:28:07","slug":"ebenezer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/?p=1070","title":{"rendered":"Ebenezer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ebenezer.\u00a0 What\u00a0classic secular\u00a0Christmas story does that make you think of?\u00a0 Nope, not\u00a0White Christmas or It&#8217;s a Wonderful Life. \u00a0A Christmas Carol by Dahl&#8217;s Chickens&#8230; no, I mean Charles Dickens.\u00a0 <strong>Ebeneezer Scrooge <\/strong>is the main character, &#8220;bah humbug&#8221;.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not the Ebenezer I&#8217;m thinking of.<\/p>\n<p>No, this <strong>Ebenezer <\/strong>is found in the Bible!\u00a0 In 1 Samuel 7:12 we read:\u00a0\u00a0<sup>&#8220;<\/sup>Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it <strong>Ebenezer<\/strong>, saying, &#8216;Thus far has the LORD helped us.'&#8221;\u00a0 The footnotes say that &#8220;Ebenezer&#8221; means &#8216;stone of help&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-ebenezer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1071\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-ebenezer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"382\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-ebenezer.jpg 382w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-ebenezer-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So at RFIS, in the prayer garden,\u00a0we have also piled up some rocks.\u00a0\u00a0And we\u00a0had the students write a name on each one.\u00a0 These are the names of people groups that now have the New Testament or portions of Scripture translated into their heart language.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-ebenezer-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1072\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-ebenezer-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"403\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-ebenezer-2.jpg 403w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-ebenezer-2-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each of these rocks represent around 20 years of linguistic and translation work.\u00a0 The translation work for many of the languages on these rocks in the prayer garden have been done by or with consultation from parents of (former\u00a0and current)\u00a0RFIS students.\u00a0 If not for RFIS taking care of the educational needs of their children, many of these languages might still be waiting for God&#8217;s word.<\/p>\n<p>I just discovered something researching &#8220;<strong>Ebenezer<\/strong>&#8221; in the Bible.\u00a0 In context, Samuel raised the rock to remind them that the Lord was their help when the people of Israel chose to turn away from foreign false gods and relied uniquely on God to save them from a battle against the Philistines.\u00a0 And as the people of the language groups on these rocks now have God&#8217;s word, they can now turn away from their false gods and fully rely on the True God to save them from the Evil One.\u00a0 So, not only is this &#8220;<strong>Ebenezer<\/strong>&#8221; at RFIS a reminder of how the Lord has been the help of all those involved in translating Scripture, but it serves as a reminder to\u00a0pray that\u00a0those who recieve God&#8217;s Word might accept his help and salvation in their own lives.<\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve been typing this, these words of an old hymn that I love, and may not be so familiar, have been going through my head.\u00a0 Much of the English is not the way we speak today, but the message is excellent&#8230; now that we know what &#8220;Ebenezer&#8221; means.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Come, thou Fount of every blessing,<br \/>\ntune my heart to sing thy grace;<br \/>\nstreams of mercy, never ceasing,<br \/>\ncall for songs of loudest praise.<br \/>\nTeach me some melodious sonnet,<br \/>\nsung by flaming tongues above.<br \/>\nPraise the mount! I&#8217;m fixed upon it,<br \/>\nmount of thy redeeming love.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">2. Here I raise mine <strong>Ebenezer<\/strong>;<br \/>\nhither by thy help I&#8217;m come;<br \/>\nand I hope, by thy good pleasure,<br \/>\nsafely to arrive at home.<br \/>\nJesus sought me when a stranger,<br \/>\nwandering from the fold of God;<br \/>\nhe, to rescue me from danger,<br \/>\ninterposed his precious blood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">3.
