Lucia in Yaounde"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is St. Lucia Day!\u00a0\u00a0Members of\u00a0the Covenant Church with its Swedish heritage,\u00a0we have had the joy of celebrating Lucia in many churches: Lucia breakfasts, Lucia smorgasbord dinners, and special music or presentations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1057\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1057\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-lucia-clipart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1057\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-lucia-clipart.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lucia with a star boy following<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Saint Lucia, originally from Sicily, was persecuted for her faith.\u00a0 Her story was carried to Sweden, and it is there that the tradition began.\u00a0\u00a0The eldest daughter of the family gets up very\u00a0early Dec. 13.\u00a0 Wearing a long white robe with red\u00a0ribbon around her waist\u00a0and a wreath of candles on her head,\u00a0 she delivers coffee and saffron buns to everyone in the house, while singing the traditional Santa Lucia song.\u00a0 December being the darkest time of year, bringing light to the world is very significant in Sweden.\u00a0 Christians, of course, recognize Jesus&#8217; birth as the light of the world coming to earth, and so celebrate St. Lucia as a part of the advent season in anticipation of Christmas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-Lucia-store21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1058\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-Lucia-store21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"76\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-Lucia-store21.jpg 397w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ziegelbaur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-Lucia-store21-300x57.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-Lucia-store2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We have Santa Lucia here in Yaounde too!\u00a0 But you won&#8217;t see girls in white dresses with candles; instead tnere are clerks in clean uniforms.\u00a0 Here, Santa Lucia is a bakery and\u00a0grocery store.\u00a0 We&#8217;re quite pleased that a new one has recently opened in our neighborhood!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-Lucia-store.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1055\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2011\/12\/2011-12-Lucia-store.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"303\" won&#8217;t find saffron buns here.\u00a0 Instead, there&#8217;s\u00a0<a><\/a><a><\/a><a><\/a>a deli counter with Cameroonian fast food, sandwiches, breads of all shapes and sizes, and yummy French
