The growing prison population of young, urban centered males is at epidemic levels. Moreover, the issues of urban education seem to be mounting at an exponential rate: drop out, inadequate classrooms, burned out teachers.\u00a0 Higher test scores are only part of the solution. Jawanza Kunjufu in the epic book, Countering The Conspiracy To Destroy Black Boys<\/a>, argues that 3rd and 4th grade are pivotal years for young boys-in particular-in that this is a time that if not educated well encouraged, aided in their development, the life before them is grim (1982, 8-13).<\/p>\n

Join Center for Youth Ministry Studies and the School of Education at North Park University for a one-day mini-conference on the issue of how the church\/youth workers and education system can work together to combat the School to Prison Pipeline phenomenon.<\/p>\n

Featuring keynote speaker Dr. Anthony Nocella III<\/a> (Hamline University and Save the Kids), two breakout sessions on Effective Church\/School Partnership Models<\/strong> (featuring Romal Tune<\/a>, author of God’s Graffiti) and the Impact of 3rd & 4th Grade Testing on Prison Industrial Complex<\/strong> (with Dr. Becky Nelson<\/a>, Dean of School of Education at North Park University,\u00a0 Dr. Bruce Bonecutter<\/a>, Isaac Reyes Mental Health Services for Cook County Juvenile Detention, and Cliff Nellis<\/a>, Lawndale Christian Legal Center), followed by a closing round table discussion.<\/p>\n
