Camp and sport ministries in Russia

Since 1967, Covenant Camps and Covenant World Mission have partnered together. Lives are being transformed all around the world, because of the generosity of camp participants. Throughout the years, campers have given offerings in support of National Church partners engaged in ministries unique to their settings, reaching people of all ages with the love of Jesus Christ. The barrios of Medellín, Colombia are set up in the hills.  Refugee families have settled on those steep streets; fleeing from violence in the villages of their countryside homes.   Over the years these hillside gatherings have developed and become part of the city – complete with paved roads, stores, churches and police presence.  Last summer I walked through these steep streets and into a Covenant Church.

Pastor Porfirio Cassares (seen below on left with Gary) was traveling on the bus from the small town of San Carlos, in the department of Córdoba, Colombia, on his way to the city Montería to attend the ministry couple encounter that Mary Lou and Gary were coordinating and leading.  It was going to be a 90 minute trip so Pastor Porfirio carefully chose his seat on the bus and got comfortable.  As Pastor Porfirio passed through the town of Cereté, he overheard one of the passengers on the bus responding to a comment from another passenger regarding Evangelical Christians.  His ears perked up and he paid attention.  Pastor Porfirio is very conscientious of what the public thinks of Christians because Pastor Porfirio is constantly looking for ways to evangelize, preach, testify, and/or hold an evangelistic service on a street corner or in a park somewhere.  He prepares evangelistic teams at the Jehovah Nissi Covenant Church where he pastors.  He encourages new believers and converts in his church to be part of these teams.  He emphasizes and trains the people to “get out there and share their faith.”

Milena is very attractive – beautiful, I would say – bright and vivacious. She is 19 years old. She was telling me about her dreams for her life.

“I want to keep working in the chocolate company,” she said, “then I can save enough money to go to the university and study law. I might go into police work.”

Later in our conversation I asked, “So, how did it all begin?”

“When I was very young,” she replied, “my step-father began to come to my room at night. He did things to me. It was always sex. When I got much older, almost 14 years old, I began to do sex work in the bars. Because I was younger than the other women, I made good money, but it was hard work being up all night and trying to stay awake in school the next day. It was dangerous, too. I was sometimes raped and beaten when I left the bars and the men who attacked me would steal my money.”
