According to this article on the Christianity Today website<\/a>\u00a0the Vatican
\nhas ruled that the word “Yahweh” should no longer be used in worship in
\nRoman Catholic churches. \u00a0The reason for this ruling is the longstanding
\nJewish practice of not pronouncing this name of God–known in its Hebrew
\nform as the “Tetragrammaton.” \u00a0The original word contains no vowels,
\nmaking it unpronounceable, and even transliterations of the word like
\n“Yahweh” and “Jehovah” are not spoken by Jews (and now Catholics) out of
\nrespect for the holiness of God.<\/p>\n

The article goes on to report various evangelical responses to this
\npractice. \u00a0Some assert that Protestants should follow suit in removing
\nthese words from their songs, translations, and prayers. \u00a0Others point
\nout that nowhere in scripture is speaking this name forbidden. \u00a0A
\nrepresentative from a large Christian publisher even talks about the
\npreferences of their “customers” regarding this issue.<\/p>\n

I’m curious what you all think. \u00a0In the Covenant worship community we
\nhave already had significant discussions about the language of our
\nworship, most notably affecting the wording of songs in our current
\nhymnal. \u00a0We’ve changed lyrics of our songs to reflect our diversity, to
\nmore carefully express our theology, to “freshen” “tired” language, and
\nto remove archaic and irrelevant words. \u00a0Is this yet one more change we
\nshould consider? \u00a0Should Hymn #408 in our hymnal now be changed to
\n“Guide Me, O You Great Redeemer”? \u00a0Should we ban the Vineyard songs
\n“Yahweh” and “He Is Yahweh” from our worship?<\/p>\n
