We hear complaints all the time:<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">&#8220;It&#8217;s too loud!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">&#8220;It&#8217;s too quiet!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">&#8220;I can&#8217;t hear the preacher!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">&#8220;The little kids in the room make too much noise!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">&#8220;Do we HAVE to sing THAT song again?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">And that&#8217;s just \u00a0from the senior pastors.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">So what gives?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">I&#8217;ve been rereading a book called<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a title=\"Scream-Free Parenting\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Screamfree-Parenting-Revolutionary-Approach-Raising\/dp\/0767927435\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1345819002&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=screamfree+parenting\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Scream-Free Parenting<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\"> and I think that it might contain the answer. In a nutshell, the premise of the book is that, to raise healthy, well-adjusted kids to become healthy, well-adjusted adults, we have to focus on ourselves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">I know, right?\u00a0It&#8217;s counterintuitive. The theory is that we are only able to directly control our own reactions to a given situation, and so if we&#8217;re to parent well, we must provide the best example possible, recognizing that we are not responsible FOR our children (who are human beings and who therefore make choices of their own agency), but that we are responsible TO our children to provide the best possible example and environment that we can for them to become who they were created to be. And so to do this, we must focus on ourselves becoming the best examples we can be. He says it like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>If\u00a0we want to produce self-directed adults, first we each have to become one ourselves. Especially in relationship to our children. This means creating space for them to make decisions and calming our anxiety about those\u00a0decisions.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">Leading is the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">On the one hand, we&#8217;re supposed to be pointing people towards God, but in order to do that, we must be aware that we are not responsible FOR them worshipping, but we are responsible TO them by providing the best environment we are able in which they can engage with God, and by providing the best example we can of what worshipping looks like.\u00a0Not a perfect environment, just the best we can;<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">There is no such thing as distraction-free.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.percussion.com\/Assets\/www.percussion.com\/siteelements\/mediafiles\/images\/Fish-And-Influence.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Influence&quot;\" width=\"242\" height=\"178\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #333333\"><strong>We can&#8217;t control the outcome, we can only influence it.<\/strong> People will still find things to complain about &#8211; kids will still make noise (because it makes so much sense to make them sit still like tiny adults), feedback will still happen, and songs will still be chosen that aren&#8217;t everybody&#8217;s favorite. He\u2019s been a missionary in Australia, India, Mexico, and Haiti, and has served as a worship pastor previously in Mitchell SD and Lenexa KS. His passion is to see worship become a missional endeavor, that the Church understand their faith in the broader context of the imitation of God and participation in the Kingdom of Heaven, rather than as an event on Sunday mornings. He hopes one day to do a PhD in Anthropology, studying how our worship practices ought to be understood in relationship to the changing cultural landscape of the Western world. Chris is also a photographer, and enjoys days out with his family and camera. He loves to read, to scuba dive, and to kayak. They have three kids, a daughter named Aurora (Rori), a son named Caedmon (CJ), and a daughter named Brielle (Bria). He graduated with a self-designed B.A. in Music in Christianity from the University of Rochester, studying and writing on the interactions between music and the Christian faith in the postmodern paradigm. He received his M.A. from Asbury Theological Seminary in 2008 in Intercultural Studies, an Anthropology and Sociology degree that specializes in Christian Missions. He\u2019s been a missionary in Australia, India, Mexico, and Haiti, and has served as a worship pastor previously in Mitchell SD and Lenexa KS. His passion is to see worship become a missional endeavor, that the Church understand their faith in the broader context of the imitation of God and participation in the Kingdom of Heaven, rather than as an event on Sunday mornings. He hopes one day to do a PhD in Anthropology, studying how our worship practices ought to be understood in relationship to the changing cultural landscape of the Western world. Chris is also a photographer, and enjoys days out with his family and camera. He loves to read, to scuba dive, and to kayak.
