Music is the one thing that every single culture on earth has in common, and while the form of music differs, not a single culture on earth is without it.<\/p>\n<p>Because we are what we sing.<\/p>\n<p>Two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alban.org\/conversation.aspx?id=9781\">posts<\/a> on our forum and some introspection this week got me thinking about the role of music in our gatherings and why we do what we do.  Why do we use music as a form of worship?  Why bother singing when much of our culture that seems to spend so much time with words and bullet points and lists?<\/p>\n<p>Because we are what we sing.<\/p>\n<p>Music helps us learn our theology.  Whole movements have begun with this concept; the Wesleyan and Methodist movements began with a pair of brothers who adapted bar songs to teach theology &#8211; now we call them \u201chymns,\u201d songs that used the poetry of music to teach that which is mysterious.  Music helps us remember our theology; we remember what we sing, often, better than we remember what we study.  Music helps us to express our theology; there is something special about poetry and lyrics that can make sense of paradoxes and contradictions, that helps us lament in times of sorry, express our joy in times of plenty.  Music inspires us to use our theology; a good song will move us beyond what we sing, beyond the walls of our building and into our community to serve.<\/p>\n<p>We are what we sing.<\/p>\n<p>We can learn about ourselves and our congregations by what we choose to sing; our musical choices and a congregation\u2019s response to them tell us more about what we are struggling with (or trying not to struggle with) than a survey can.  So my question for you all is this:<\/p>\n<p>What does your music say about who your church is?  Are there things you feel you ought to sing about more? They have three kids, a daughter named Aurora (Rori), a son named Caedmon (CJ), and a daughter named Brielle (Bria). He graduated with a self-designed B.A. in Music in Christianity from the University of Rochester, studying and writing on the interactions between music and the Christian faith in the postmodern paradigm. He received his M.A. from Asbury Theological Seminary in 2008 in Intercultural Studies, an Anthropology and Sociology degree that specializes in Christian Missions. He\u2019s been a missionary in Australia, India, Mexico, and Haiti, and has served as a worship pastor previously in Mitchell SD and Lenexa KS. His passion is to see worship become a missional endeavor, that the Church understand their faith in the broader context of the imitation of God and participation in the Kingdom of Heaven, rather than as an event on Sunday mornings. He hopes one day to do a PhD in Anthropology, studying how our worship practices ought to be understood in relationship to the changing cultural landscape of the Western world. Chris is also a photographer, and enjoys days out with his family and camera. He loves to read, to scuba dive, and to kayak.
