\"Celebrate!\"Today’s post is written by Chris Logan, Worship Pastor at Community Covenant Church<\/a> in Lenexa, KS.<\/em><\/p>\n

The occasion of several birthdays in our worship arts family this week got me thinking about the importance of celebration. Throughout the scriptures, celebration plays a key role in the life of the Hebrews; Joseph threw his brothers a party, David danced, Ezra read from the scriptures to a multitude with rapt attention, Isaiah saw the angels singing \u201cHoly Holy Holy,\u201d Jesus and the disciples ate together on many occasions. But we\u2019re left with a picture at the end of the second testament that outdoes them all; a new city descending to a new earth, gleaming and brilliant with light, and a spotless bride dressed to match her husband. A wedding, and a banquet. A dawn breaking. A brand new beginning. And then the passage abruptly ends; we don\u2019t get to keep reading the next adventure \u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026 it leaves us to wonder what\u2019s next.<\/p>\n

There is anticipation in celebration. To celebrate is not simply to remember the things of the past with fondness – though this too has its place. But in the scriptures, the final celebration is an anticipation of what is to come, with joy looking towards that which is new, that which is vibrant, that which is better than what came before.<\/p>\n

\"TheIn these trying economic\/environmental\/political times, it seems like celebrations become few and far between. Nothing seems worth celebrating because we are anxious about the next disaster that lurks just around the corner. But imagine if we approached our ministries with the anticipation of celebrating that which is coming, the good that God is going to be doing in the world around us rather than simply remembering how it used to be great! Though the joints are feeling a little creaky, the eyesight is starting to fog up (presbyopia starts around 40, just sayin\u2019), the muscles ache more than they used to \u2026 what if that was merely a precursor to \u201cyeah, but just wait till you see how much this year is going to bring!\u201d Like the birthdays of our friends and colleagues, let\u2019s not just celebrate the lives well lived in our churches, but let\u2019s celebrate the new, let\u2019s celebrate the goodness of what\u2019s to come!<\/p>\n

And so to those of you who have just had birthdays, congratulations on being born! We pray that you find new opportunities in this coming year, that your celebration includes and embraces the unknown blessings (and the ones in disguise) of the years to come. And to our churches, may we learn to celebrate the goodness of God regularly, with abandon and with passion, that God can do through us great things for our communities and for our world!<\/p>\n

In addition to voice and guitar, he is also plays French Horn and Saxophone. His wife Liz is also a musician, and they have been married since 2004. They have three kids, a daughter named Aurora (Rori), a son named Caedmon (CJ), and a daughter named Brielle (Bria). He graduated with a self-designed B.A. in Music in Christianity from the University of Rochester, studying and writing on the interactions between music and the Christian faith in the postmodern paradigm. He received his M.A. from Asbury Theological Seminary in 2008 in Intercultural Studies, an Anthropology and Sociology degree that specializes in Christian Missions. He\u2019s been a missionary in Australia, India, Mexico, and Haiti, and has served as a worship pastor previously in Mitchell SD and Lenexa KS. His passion is to see worship become a missional endeavor, that the Church understand their faith in the broader context of the imitation of God and participation in the Kingdom of Heaven, rather than as an event on Sunday mornings. He hopes one day to do a PhD in Anthropology, studying how our worship practices ought to be understood in relationship to the changing cultural landscape of the Western world. Chris is also a photographer, and enjoys days out with his family and camera. He loves to read, to scuba dive, and to kayak.
