So I thought I\u2019d blog about the stuff I think I know\u2014particularly things I learned about leading the arts and worship in the local church. Don\u2019t worry. The series won\u2019t be long; I don\u2019t know much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\">I\u2019ve thought of 12 topics, and the working titles are thus:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>When the cat\u2019s away<\/li>\n<li><span><span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Everything is your fault<\/li>\n<li>The devil is in the details<\/li>\n<li>You can\u2019t get blood out of a turnip<\/li>\n<li>A prayer for mutual help<\/li>\n<li>Garbage in, garbage out<\/li>\n<li>You get what you pay for<\/li>\n<li>People are down on what they\u2019re not up on<\/li>\n<li>Never ask for volunteers<\/li>\n<li>Grace plus time<\/li>\n<li>Ideas are cheap<\/li>\n<li>Not by Might<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\">\u00a0So\u2026 here we go. Number 1.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>When the cat\u2019s away, the mice will play<\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\">That\u2019s code for: The senior pastor or primary preaching personality must be significantly involved in the worship planning and leadership, else trouble will erupt. Or worse, the worship service will ineffective, and not surprising, since rodent leaders are in charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\">I used to feel sorry for pastors who say: I can\u2019t lead the arts team; I can\u2019t mentor or supervise a worship leader; I\u2019m not a musician; I\u2019m no good at creative planning; I\u2019m a pastor, but I\u2019m not a leader\u2026 So I would give workshops for these pastors and tell them, \u201cThat\u2019s okay. You can hire strategically for arts leadership or have a leader-associate or lay leader oversee this area.\u201d I wish I\u2019d never given that bad advice, I don\u2019t believe it anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\">It\u2019s the senior \u00a0pastor\u2019s job to oversee the themes and topics that are preached on the weekends. It\u2019s also that person\u2019s job to make sure the whole message is coherent and delivered with excellence. That means: music, announcements, visuals on screen, other arts\/media and the message all coordinate and neither bore nor confuse the regulars and visitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\">There are different styles of senior involvement; and abdication is not an option. The quality and content of the weekend worship experience depends on the passion and commitment of the senior leader in the church.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\">Show us a worship leader who effectively leads the arts and worship, and we\u2019ll find, somewhere in the scenery, a senior pastor who is opinionated, invested and involved in the weekend communications. Show us a worship leader who effectively leads without the involvement of the senior pastor, and we\u2019ll find a worship leader who might not last in the position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\">(Sidebar: The best worship leaders expect good chemistry with the senior pastor)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpLast\">Senior pastors. You can do it. Here are two steps you can take this week:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Initiate a forum where you and the main arts leader\/s debrief the weekend service. This is the place for discussing what worked well and what you would like to improve.<\/li>\n<li>Initiate a forum\/process for mutual consideration of what goes into each service\u2014announcing the theme\/texts in advance, sharing ideas for songs, visuals and other art elements, eliminating unworkable ideas, deciding on the order of worship.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpFirst\">Both these activities can take place in one meeting, early each week. These meetings are never short or easy; yet they bring you together with those who have the opportunity to influence (for bad or good) then entire congregation and neighborhood (assuming people bring their friends), every seven days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\">Yikes.
