James Limburg has a wonderful commentary on the Psalms<\/a>. The following reflections about the original Hebrew text come from Limburg\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n

At the center of Psalm 23 is a most encouraging phrase: for you are with me.<\/em> Limburg notes that leading up to the phrase, there are precisely 26 Hebrew words. Additionally, there are exactly 26 words from the end of the phrase to the end of the Psalm. The preposition, \u201cfor you are with me\u201d is at the center of the 23rd<\/sup> Psalm.<\/p>\n

Was the writer centering this phrase to symbolize the centrality of the concept\u2014God is with me<\/em>? I hope so! I very much like the idea, and if this placement is mere accident, I\u2019m disappointed, indeed.:)<\/p>\n

The idea that God is with us is communicated over and over at the high points of Scripture. The Lord comforts Isaac with the words, \u201cDo not be afraid, for I am with you\u201d (Gen. 26.24). We know from Genesis 39 that God was with Joseph in Egypt. God told a hesitant Jeremiah, \u201cDo not be afraid of them, for I am with you\u201d (Jer. 1.8 and 15.20). God spoke to Paul in a dream: \u201cDo not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent; for I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to harm you\u201d (Acts 18.9-10).<\/p>\n

The most powerful revelation of God’s nearness is Jesus: \u201cand they shall name him \u2018Emmanuel,\u2019 which means \u2018God is with us\u2019\u201d (Matt. 1.23).<\/p>\n

In worship we say, \u201cThe Lord be with you.\u201d The closeness of God is the central to our life and faith.<\/p>\n
