I may not have tried it if I\u2019d spent my life in the U.S. since sleeping in my own bed was all I knew. Apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nd.edu\/~jmckenn1\/lab\/safe.html\">co-sleeping<\/a> is gaining some popularity \u00a0(at least one of my Seattle friends did it for a while), \u00a0but aside from this rarely heard word, I\u2019m not even aware of a phrase to distinguish it from the euphemism for sex.<\/p>\n<p>Here in Japan where space is limited and the mother-infant bond is assumed to take primacy over all else for the first three years of life, it is virtually a given. When our first child arrived, we had some hesitations- particularly about safety- but the desire to be close to our new little one and the encouragement of those around us invited us to try. Through sleeping together I noticed many things.<\/p>\n<p>Of course one notices breathing and sleep patterns, body temperature, restfulness and wakefulness without even trying to. In addition, there is a mysterious connection signalling that the baby has just fallen asleep or just woken up although there\u2019s no visible sign. It\u2019s almost like being joined by some intangible communication system that doesn\u2019t involve the senses. And then there is the smile! Perhaps it is just as bright when it comes from a crib to a parent walking through the door to get the baby up, but the amazed smile of a baby waking to the steady gaze of an adoring parent happened to me first in Japan, on a futon while sleeping together. <em>\u201cHow precious are your thoughts about me, O God! They are innumerable! I can\u2019t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up in the morning, you are still with me!\u201d (Psalm 139:18)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2011\/01\/Andrea-Sky.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-453\" title=\"Andrea &amp; Sky\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2011\/01\/Andrea-Sky.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"409\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/tajohnson?moderation_action=report_form&object_type=post&object_id=450&width=250&height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the experiences I\u2019ve had because of living in Japan is sleeping together with my kids.
