Ministry Resources

In the Southeast Conference, we believe that life is better together.  One of the crucial functions of our conference is to be a centralized location to help distribute resources.  Resources that help our churches do ministry better, our pastor’s lead well, care well and teach well, and all of our people to follow Jesus more closely.

Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction….is this spiritual practice for you?

Having read the question, you may be asking “What is it?” That is a good and important question. Spiritual Direction is a ministry of holy listening, prayer and discernment in a confidential setting of encouragement for persons

  • who are seeking to grow in their relationship with God,
  • who are wanting an opportunity to focus on God’s working in his or her life, and
  • who would like the companionship of another person with whom to reflect on what they are hearing from and experiencing with God.

We live such busy and intense lives that often we only have time to pay attention to what is so immediate and in front of us and neglect, not necessarily consciously, what is moving more deeply in our life. Spiritual direction is an ancient spiritual practice that invites us to reflect, more consciously, on the presence and movement of God in our life.

In spiritual direction a person has a trained companion who can listen to the stories of one’s life and help discern the presence and work of God’s Spirit. One person, who meets with a spiritual director wrote that this is “a time to focus on God’s workings in my life and to hear another come alongside for the purpose of encouragement, reflection and often affirmation of the messages I’m hearing. (My director’s) input helps me to consider another vantage point to become more aware of ways in which God is working both outwardly, the more obvious, and inwardly, the more subtle. I’m reminded during these sessions of how free, forgiven and loved I truly am. There is grace and this grace I’m able to taste and experience in our meetings together.”

We come back to the question, “Is this spiritual practice for you?” If you would like to know more about spiritual direction, or who a spiritual director is that you could meet with, please contact Rev. Dr. Robert Tenglin, the Southeast Conference coordinator at rjtenglin@aol.com.

Sustaining Pastoral Excellence

Sustaining Pastoral Excellence is directed through the Department of the Ordered Ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church. The purpose of the initiative is to resource our denominational ministers for personal and vocational vitality as they continue to obediently respond to God’s call. Credentialed pastors and missionaries can apply for grants to help them pursue growth opportunities in the areas of character, competence, and constancy. The resources for this initiative come from a grant from the Lilly Endowment, Covenant ministers, Regional Conferences, and individual donors.

Renewal Retreats

Pastors and missionaries who feel the need to spend 3 to 7 days in retreat, prayer, and study can make application to the Sustaining Pastoral Excellence initiative for such a purpose. An outline of the retreat components will need to accompany the grant application. Grants of up to $900 are awarded for personal renewal retreats, and $5,000 for group retreats (4 or more individuals). Please look under “frequently asked questions” for instructions on group grants.

The Spring 2010 Re-visioning Retreat will be held May 2-7, 2010 at the Abbey Guesthouse at Saint John’s in Collegeville, Minnesota.

This retreat experience is designed for those in ministry who are seeking to renew their friendship with God, reignite their pastoral imagination and explore their call in a deeper way. There will be two retreats offered per year with a maximum of 10 participants per retreat.

All expenses for the retreat experience including registration, lodging, food, and materials will be covered. A travel allowance of up to $500 will be provided for transportation to and from the seminar. All applicants must submit a $125 refundable deposit when making application to attend (more details are found on the application form).
