Dr. Owens has said many times that the ethos of the Covenant “is more caught than taught.” Words are not adequate to describe the sense of love, support, and encouragement that arise from our gatherings together. However, as soon as one experiences this fellowship, the lights go on and there is a new sense of being part of a larger community of faith that brings our SEC motto, “It’s Better Together” to life.

At this particular gathering, many “Greats” were experienced by those in attendance. These include:

At the conclusion of the gathering, comments were made that there was now a greater understanding of the Covenant, and a great hunger to continue to meet and strengthen the connections that were fostered in this time. Some spoke of even having pulpit exchanges, and choir or praise team exchanges, and similar ideas as ways of furthering our support and shared ministry together!

Overall this was a powerful time, and God clearly made our slogan come alive right before our eyes…truly we are “Better Together!” We look forward to being together again real soon!

He is known not just for courageously leading the church, but courageously leading causes in Atlanta and around the world that matter. Most recently, he endeavored to climb Mount Rainer (14,411 feet in Seattle, WA). This was not done to win a popularity contest or an IronMan contest, but for something more important. The goal is to provide the people of Haiti with fresh water. Now that’s a goal to b proud of!

The Evangelical Covenant Church can be proud to have a pastor within its ranks that takes to heart the words of Jesus not just in the church, but around the world!

This year’s theme in the Conference is about the transforming of lives. When I think about transformation, I am thinking about change, and the scripture that comes to mind is Romans 12: 2, ”Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” The gospel has the power to change our lives and engender fruit that is well pleasing to the Father.

Let me first start with me; how had the gospel changed me. I believe that God has gifted me to proclaim the message of reconciliation and a holistic gospel from an evangelical perspective. I believe that all of my Christian experiences have prepared me to move aggressively into this phase of ministry for the 21st century.

My model of ministry has been, and continues to be, a vision for a church that is Christological focused rather than ecclesiological focused, and one that lives out its call by reflecting the Kingdom of God. Three areas of concentration for achieving this are discipleship, addressing the needs of the poor and reconciliation in the body of Christ. When I think about the values of the Conference (reaching the lost, nurturing the faithful, transforming lives and reflecting the kingdom), I am hopeful that living out those values helps us to be incarnate and reflect the heart of Christ. As you think through your call and what it is that God has placed in your Spirit, how have you been transformed and what does that mean for your ministry?

Spiritual direction, as describe by Dr. Robert Tenglin, “is a ministry of one person prayerfully listening to and sharing in the spiritual journey of another. Together, both are paying attention to God’s presence and movement in the life of the person who is sharing his or her story.”

In the next couple of weeks, more specifically, October 5-7, 2010, pastors and spouses from all over the Southeast Conference will be gathering at the Karaway Conference Center (4756 Karaway Mountain Road, Sophia, NC 27350) for the Pastor/Spouse Retreat. This year, we have included the opportunity for spiritual direction. I am encouraging you to take advantage of this opportunity and to go on this journey of sharing. Personally, I am on the journey, and I have found it to be revealing, redemptive and a time of renewal.

You may contact Dr. Tenglin for an appointment at rjtenglin@aol.com
