{"id":640,"date":"2017-06-01T17:27:22","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T22:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/resantana\/?p=640"},"modified":"2017-06-01T17:42:48","modified_gmt":"2017-06-01T22:42:48","slug":"a-new-citizen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/resantana\/2017\/06\/01\/a-new-citizen\/","title":{"rendered":"A new Citizen!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>One month!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>It has been one month of Minnesota livin&#8217;!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/resantana\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2017\/06\/18871629_10155217603026287_49053569_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-657 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/resantana\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2017\/06\/18871629_10155217603026287_49053569_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"656\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/resantana\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2017\/06\/18871629_10155217603026287_49053569_n.jpg 656w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/resantana\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2017\/06\/18871629_10155217603026287_49053569_n-205x300.jpg 205w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>As I am typing,<\/strong> I literally just swatted at a mosquito and am\u00a0smelling freshly cut grass which has been a staple since arriving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Oh Minnesota!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Along with the mosquitos<\/strong>, cut grass, long, beautiful days, cool, frog-chirping nights, we&#8217;ve also been having our share of cold, air-conditioned government centers, loooong lines, lots of waiting, the beeping of security check points, ink on paper, signature, signature, &#8220;I swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth&#8221;, and more waiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Life is so dichotomous.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>After arriving to Minnesota we had Richard&#8217;s interview<\/strong> (Civic&#8217;s Test for Naturalization) and thought that we were going to be able to be back in Ecuador by the end of May. Well, during the test, the interviewer thought that we had spent too much time outside of the United States and, although Richard passed his civic&#8217;s test, we were told that he could not be approved for citizenship based on more info being needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Well, we were definitely not expecting that!<\/strong> We were not given any more info and told to wait until we received more information in\u00a0the mail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Let&#8217;s just say that was the most nerve-racking week<\/strong> we had had in a long time. If Richard wasn&#8217;t going to be able to get his citizenship, we were pretty much stuck in the USA until we could reapply for citizenship which could take up to another 6 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Thankfully that was not the case<\/strong> and a week later we received a letter saying that Richard was approved for citizenship and was suppose to attend the\u00a0naturalization ceremony which was two days ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Richard is now an official citizen<\/strong> of the United States of America!!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/resantana\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2017\/06\/18835190_10155217605246287_1356661575_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-645\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/resantana\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2017\/06\/18835190_10155217605246287_1356661575_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/resantana\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2017\/06\/18835190_10155217605246287_1356661575_n.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/resantana\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2017\/06\/18835190_10155217605246287_1356661575_n-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>It was such a powerful ceremony.<\/strong> There were 829 new citizens that day who represented 92 countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>I really enjoyed sitting next to these sweet ladies<\/strong> as we talked about the journey to this day, the need for change in the immigration systems, and how today, all of us, from different religions, cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs, were all here for one purpose and we were all here to celebrate together, differences aside. And that is what we did. After the oath was taken, and the 829 become official citizens, you could see Guatemalans hugging Canadians, Syrians congratulating Cubanos, People from India shaking hands with people from Somalia, and so on and so forth.
