EVANSVILLE, MN (November 10, 2004) – It may be located in a smaller community in Minnesota, but the impact of Calvary Covenant in Evansville extends all the way to Alaska where a 17-member team from Calvary and neighboring Faith Lutheran Church gave a helping hand to the Amundsen Education Center in Soldotna, Alaska.<\/p>\n
The group, which included six high school students, worked on a number of projects. “We dug a six-foot-by-30-inch trench for heat and water lines,” says pastor Jeffery Hokanson, who serves as youth pastor for both churches. “We also finished the framing up of the first floor of the new classroom building, brought the entry of their dorm up to code, finished tiling the second dorm floor, installed electrical outlets, installed two range exhaust hoods, landscaped around the buildings, cleaned sheds and sorted out donated items,” he added.<\/p>\n
The team also spent time in family groups praying, studying God’s word and bonding. “We didn’t forget touring area sights (Russian River Falls with the salmon jumping) or fishing (one team member caught an 85-pound Halibut) and souvenir shopping.”<\/p>\n
The Amundsen Educational Center is a newly organized Christian postsecondary vocational school, founded by Covenanters from Alaska and intended to serve Alaska Natives and others from the villages of rural Alaska. Their goal is to build up young people in their faith and vocation so that they can be the leaders of tomorrow in their own villages.<\/p>\n
