CHICAGO, IL (November 22, 2005) – The North Park University men’s and women’s cross country teams have decided to run for money. They won’t be in violation of any NCAA rules, however, as they will be raising money for charity and to help the program.<\/p>\n
The teams will combine runners to take shifts running a treadmill for 24 hours, says men’s Coach Elliott Nott. “Our goal is to run over 175 miles, but it’s hard to keep your legs moving in the late hours when your body wants to sleep. I’ve done it and it’s tough.”<\/p>\n
Each runner will get plenty of opportunity to run as they take half-hour and hour-long shifts on the treadmill, says Nott, who came up with the idea at a previous school where he coached. The event will take place in the Carlson lobby beginning at 6 p.m. December 6 and ending at 6 p.m. December 7.<\/p>\n
Individuals wanting to pledge can do so by the mile or by giving a flat donation, says Nott. Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity and 50 percent will go towards development of the cross country teams.<\/p>\n
“This is an incredible opportunity for us to use our talents and gifts to better serve others,” says women’s Coach Tracey Murnane. “Their truly selfless nature is amazing – during their downtime, they would rather be active and helping others than enjoying the little free time that they have.”<\/p>\n
