BURNSVILLE, MN (August 25, 2009) \u2013 Nearly 750 middle school youth and adult leaders from 50 Northwest Conference<\/a> churches gathered August 13-15 for the Most Unbelievable Ultimate Urban Camping Experience (MUUUCE) at Faith Covenant Church.<\/p>\n

\"\"The 2009 theme was “More Than Meets the Eye” and was based on 2 Corinthians 3:18.<\/p>\n

The Josiah Smith Band led music. Kris Causton of Excelsior Covenant Church<\/a> was this year’s speaker.<\/p>\n

Causton reminded the students that there is more than meets the eye with each one of them in terms of God’s plans and purposes for their lives. There also is more than meets the eye with everyone else they meet.<\/p>\n

The students gave $1,459 in a special offering for Minnesota Teen Challenge.<\/p>\n

The 22nd MUUUCE event provided many of the experiences of past events including Valley Fair, water parks and CHAOS (Crazy Humans Attempting Outrageous Stunts). New this year was a tailgate dinner and a St. Paul Saints minor league baseball game.<\/p>\n

Lollapalooza: Should the Church Be Listening?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CHICAGO, IL \u2013 Does the eclectic, indie Lollapalooza<\/a> music festival have something to say to the church?<\/p>\n

That is one of the questions considered by David Swanson, a pastor at New Community Covenant Church<\/a>, in an article<\/a> on the Christianity Today<\/em> website. Swanson and a friend attended the multi-day festival in Chicago and were struck by how people who preferred one style of music began to appreciate styles that were vastly different.<\/p>\n

\u201cReviewing the bands I’d seen over the past day and a half revealed no particular trend,\u201d Swanson writes. \u201cHip-hop, rock, folk, dance, world, country, and electronica were all represented. I began noticing punk-rock kids watching folk singers and dreadlocked hippies at the hip-hop stage. While the festival crowd was not without personal preference, we often chose variety and diversity over familiarity and comfort.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swanson writes, \u201cMight Lollapalooza\u2019s improbable diversity – both the music and the crowds – be a more compelling vision at this moment than what passes for reconciled community in many of our churches?\u201d<\/p>\n
