TAICHUNG, TAIWAN (August 10, 2009) \u2013 One of the Taiwan Covenant Churches has sustained damage from Typhoon Morakot, but the extent was unknown this morning. Whether any members have been injured or evacuated also was unknown.

Other Covenanters are reported to be safe, says Dave Dolan, regional coordinator for Chinese Ministry with the Department of World Mission. Dolan spoke with Caleb Yu, the administrative secretary of the denomination in Taiwan. The damaged church was the Donggang congregation, which is located in southern Taiwan.<\/p>\n
More than 600 people in Taiwan have been reported killed in mudslides and flooding caused by eight feet of rain that fell over three days.<\/p>\n
Missionary Don Dwight wrote in an email on Sunday that his family and the Morrison Academy were safe because they are not located near any major rivers. \u201cWe also live in an area that drains fairly well,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, many in Taiwan are still in danger, and we would appreciate your prayers for those people as well as the rescue workers, many who are putting their lives on the line to save others,\u201d Dwight said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe people hardest hit are those living next to rivers at the foot of the mountains,\u201d Dwight said. Hillsides, including many houses and some medium-sized hotels, have been washed away. Several bridges have been destroyed leaving people stranded with no way to reach stores or hospitals.<\/p>\n
