Johanson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TURLOCK, CA (December 16, 2003)\u00a0 &#8211; A memorial service was held on Saturday at\u00a0 the Covenant Village of Turlock for retired ordained Covenant pastor\u00a0 Henry M. Johanson, who died last Wednesday at Emanuel Medical Center in\u00a0 Turlock.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Johanson, a former director of Christian education for what is now known\u00a0 as the Pacific Southwest Conference, had been living at Covenant Village\u00a0 for many years, said Covenant Village of Turlock chaplain Bob Atkins.\u00a0 Atkins and Robert &#8220;Bob&#8221; Anderson officiated at Saturday&#8217;s service.<\/p>\n<div>The 88-year-old Johanson was born March 14, 1915, in Kingsburg,\u00a0 California, and earned his undergraduate degree from San Jose State\u00a0 College (now university) in 1941. He married Kezia Rudin in San Jose on\u00a0 June 14, 1942, after serving as interim pastor at Maplewood Covenant\u00a0 Church in Chicago. After they married, Johanson was assistant pastor at\u00a0 what is now Edgebrook Covenant Church for one year. He also completed\u00a0 his ministerial education at North Park Theological Seminary, earning\u00a0 his diploma in 1943.<\/p>\n<div>Johanson served from 1943 to 1950 at Mission Covenant Church in\u00a0 Stockton, California, and was ordained during the 1947 Annual Meeting of\u00a0 the Evangelical Covenant Church. After six years (1950-56) at First\u00a0 Mission Covenant Church in Moline, Illinois, Johanson became director of\u00a0 Christian education for the conference from 1956-61. He then returned to\u00a0 a full-time church pastorate at Trinity Covenant Church in Minneapolis,\u00a0 Minnesota, and then served as an interim pastor for two Evangelical\u00a0 United congregations while taking class work at St. Cloud State College\u00a0 in 1967.<\/p>\n<div>Following a four-year period (1968-72) at Richland Covenant Church in\u00a0 Richland, Michigan, Johanson served at four churches in interim\u00a0 pastorates &#8211; including five years at First Covenant Church in Fort\u00a0 Dodge, Iowa &#8211; before retiring in 1980.<\/p>\n<div>Two children, Karen and Bonnie, and six grandchildren survive Johanson.\u00a0 His wife, Kezia, preceded him in death.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>Copyright \u00a9 2011 The Evangelical Covenant Church.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire?moderation_action=report_form&#038;object_type=post&#038;object_id=8477&#038;width=250&#038;height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TURLOCK, CA (December 16, 2003)\u00a0 &#8211; A memorial service was held on Saturday at\u00a0 the Covenant Village of Turlock for retired ordained Covenant pastor\u00a0 Henry M.
