{"id":8455,"date":"2003-12-11T22:35:41","date_gmt":"2003-12-12T03:35:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=8455"},"modified":"2011-07-06T08:28:11","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T13:28:11","slug":"3396","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2003\/12\/11\/3396\/","title":{"rendered":"School Half Days Mean New Ministry for Harbert Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HARBERT, MI (December 11, 2003)\u00a0 &#8211; It&#8217;s a dilemma that many parents of\u00a0 school-aged children face &#8211; what to do with their children when schools\u00a0 have a half day.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Harbert Community Church has found a new way to meet that need &#8211; by\u00a0 hosting an after-school program for elementary students when the school\u00a0 has half days.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0647.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[8455]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8456\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0647.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"246\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a>Fifteen times, the church will provide children in grades 1-5 with\u00a0 activities when school ends early, said pastor Joel Kruggel. So far, the\u00a0 church has hosted five &#8220;half-day programs.&#8221; A number of retired\u00a0 parishioners, including former teachers, dance instructors, musicians\u00a0 and others, are among more than 60 volunteers helping coordinate\u00a0 activities for 49 students.<\/p>\n<div>The program operates from about 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m on half days,\u00a0 with activities including a snack lunch (which the family sends with the\u00a0 child), a reading time, an exercise period, crafts, music, and even\u00a0 introductory foreign language modules. The cost to the church is about\u00a0 $50 per half day.<\/p>\n<div>Volunteers have been teaching kids French, Spanish, Dutch, German and\u00a0 Swedish, said Kruggel. They range from 12-year-old Luke Linscheid and\u00a0 some high-school students to 81-year-old Jane Temple, a lay leader from\u00a0 the church&#8217;s mission committee. Associate pastor Kent Lindquist is\u00a0 assisting the coordination of the program. Adults who come to pick up\u00a0 children must register inside the church, which has allowed parishioners\u00a0 to get to know some of the parents\/guardians\/relatives of the children.<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;We tried to divide the kids up in groups (K-5th grade) and move them\u00a0 around the church,&#8221; said Lindquist. &#8220;We had my father talk about working\u00a0 with tools and another lady talked about spinning. We&#8217;ve had music\u00a0 modules and singing, time to do homework, time to play ping pong and\u00a0 board games. We&#8217;re not doing anything &#8216;religious,&#8217; although we&#8217;re\u00a0 certainly living examples of Christianity.<\/p>\n<div>Lindquist continued, &#8220;It&#8217;s been a real safe place for the kids and we&#8217;ve\u00a0 gotten people into the building that have never been in a church in\u00a0 their life. And the adults who volunteer are getting to know some of\u00a0 these people. At least 20 volunteers are here at the church during part\u00a0 of the day and some volunteer for the whole afternoon. You&#8217;re exhausted\u00a0 by the end of the day but it&#8217;s awesome.
