{"id":8441,"date":"2003-12-08T22:22:52","date_gmt":"2003-12-09T03:22:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=8441"},"modified":"2011-07-06T08:27:58","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T13:27:58","slug":"3390","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2003\/12\/08\/3390\/","title":{"rendered":"North Park Hoopsters Earn a Split Over Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHICAGO, IL (December 8, 2003)\u00a0 &#8211; The North Park University (NPU) basketball\u00a0 teams split their home games\u00a0 Saturday as the women&#8217;s team beat Carthage\u00a0 College 57-53 in an afternoon conference contest and the men lost 66-64\u00a0 to Webster University in a non-league game later that evening.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Megan Slattery scored an inside basket with 39 seconds left and Tiffany\u00a0 Campbell added two foul shots with 15 seconds remaining as North Park&#8217;s\u00a0 women moved to 6-2 overall, 1-1 in the College Conference of Illinois\u00a0 and Wisconsin (CCIW). Carthage had trailed 51-41 before tying the game\u00a0 53-53 on a 3-pointer by Rachel Markham.<\/p>\n<div>Campbell led all scorers with 17 points and made 7 of 8 foul shots as\u00a0 her team combined for 15 of 20 free throw shooting for the game.\u00a0 Slattery paced the Vikings with eight rebounds and added 12 points on 6\u00a0 of 10 field goals.<\/p>\n<div>Early in the contest, Shandrel Young was the catalyst for North Park&#8217;s\u00a0 quality play. She scored three inside baskets as the Vikings scored\u00a0 eight straight points in a span of 1:50 and took a 13-4 lead. She had\u00a0 nine points of her 14 total points in the half as North Park led 28-27\u00a0 after 20 minutes. She also led her team with five assists Saturday.<\/p>\n<div>North Park&#8217;s women play in Washington D.C. on December 14 against\u00a0 Catholic University. The Vikings play Trinity College of Washington D.C.\u00a0 on December 15 before taking time off for Christmas vacation.<\/p>\n<div>In the men&#8217;s game, Javier Sanchez had 15 points and nine rebounds but\u00a0 Steve Waterkotte&#8217;s two foul shots with 21 seconds left helped Webster\u00a0 edge the Vikings, who are now 4-2 overall. North Park&#8217;s men travel to\u00a0 Lake Forest for a 7 p.m. non-league game Tuesday at Lake Forest College.<\/p>\n<div>Sanchez scored seven of his points in the opening 4:21 of the second\u00a0 half as North Park quickly narrowed its 38-31 half-time deficit. Brett\u00a0 Mathisen&#8217;s tip-in basket gave coach Rees Johnson&#8217;s team its first lead,\u00a0 47-46, with 11:23 remaining and the game was tight from then on until\u00a0 Waterkotte&#8217;s game winning points.
