{"id":8437,"date":"2003-12-05T22:19:53","date_gmt":"2003-12-06T03:19:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=8437"},"modified":"2011-07-06T08:27:58","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T13:27:58","slug":"3388","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2003\/12\/05\/3388\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Instructor Files Discrimination Complaint"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHICAGO, IL (December 5) \u2013 A former North Park University teacher has\u00a0 filed an employment discrimination complaint alleging she was denied a\u00a0 full-time tenure-track teaching position at the university because of\u00a0 her sexual orientation.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Barbara Kelly, who filed the complaint Wednesday with the Chicago\u00a0 Commission on Human Relations, claims she was denied a position in the\u00a0 human development division because she is a lesbian.<\/p>\n<div>Kelly, 52 and an Episcopalian, taught an introductory psychology class\u00a0 part-time until this summer when she applied for a full-time position.\u00a0 Her complaint alleges she was later told she would not be a candidate\u00a0 for the position because of her sexual orientation.<\/p>\n<div>During a press conference at the school Wednesday, President David\u00a0 Horner said the matter involves adherence to university policy, not\u00a0 discrimination based on sexual orientation. Quoting from the\u00a0 university&#8217;s policy, Horner said &#8220;full-time faculty are expected to be\u00a0 committed Christians in faith and action, as traditionally understood by\u00a0 the Evangelical Covenant Church.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>He then cited a Resolution on Human Sexuality approved by delegates to\u00a0 the 1996 Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church, which states\u00a0 in part, &#8220;Heterosexual marriage, faithfulness within marriage,\u00a0 abstinence outside of marriage \u2013 these constitute the Christian\u00a0 standard.&#8221; He then added, &#8220;Church statements such as this inform our\u00a0 university&#8217;s decisions related to personnel and other matters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>The Chicago Human Rights Ordinance, under which the complaint was filed,\u00a0 prohibits discrimination in employment based, among other things, on\u00a0 sexual orientation, which is later defined as &#8220;the actual or perceived\u00a0 state of heterosexuality, homosexuality or bisexuality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>However, the ordinance provides an exception to the standards for\u00a0 certain religious organizations. &#8220;Nothing in this chapter shall apply to\u00a0 decisions of a religious society, association, organization or\u00a0 institution affecting the definition, promulgating or advancement of the\u00a0 mission, practices or beliefs of the society, association, organization\u00a0 or institution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>The complaint was filed with the city commission because state and\u00a0 federal laws do not cover claims of discrimination based on sexual\u00a0 orientation.
