CHICAGO, IL (December 5) \u2013 Editor’s note: Following is the complete\u00a0 text of Dr. David Horner’s statement presented during a press conference\u00a0 Thursday at the school.<\/em><\/p>\n

As a matter of university policy, North Park does not comment in the\u00a0 press on individual personnel matters or litigation. It is our\u00a0 understanding that a lawsuit is being filed related to our hiring practices.<\/p>\n
North Park University is a Christian university owned and operated by\u00a0 the Evangelical Covenant Church; our hiring policies reflect our\u00a0 Christian mission and our relationship to our sponsoring denomination.\u00a0 These policies state that “full-time faculty are expected to be\u00a0 committed Christians in faith and action, as traditionally understood by\u00a0 the Evangelical Covenant Church.”<\/p>\n
The perspective of the Covenant Church with respect to sexual ethics is\u00a0 expressed in a 1996 Annual Meeting Resolution on Human Sexuality. This\u00a0 resolution states in part, “God created people male and female, and\u00a0 provided for the marriage relationship in which two may become one. A\u00a0 publicly declared, legally binding marriage between one woman and one\u00a0 man is the one appropriate place for sexual intercourse. Heterosexual\u00a0 marriage, faithfulness within marriage, abstinence outside of marriage \u2013 these constitute the Christian standard.”<\/p>\n
