Gustafson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BATAVIA, IL (December 1, 2003)\u00a0 &#8211; A memorial service was held at the\u00a0 Evangelical Covenant Church of Batavia this morning for retired Covenant\u00a0 minister Arthur F. Gustafson, who died last Wednesday at the Michealsen\u00a0 Health Care Center at The Holmstad of Batavia.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Pastor Mark Nilson of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Batavia\u00a0 officiated at Monday&#8217;s service, along with chaplain Larry Dieckman of\u00a0 The Holmstad. Gustafson had moved to The Holmstad in 1994 after retiring\u00a0 from 46 years of ministry.<\/p>\n<div>Gustafson was born January 1, 1912 in Dayton, Iowa, then moved to\u00a0 Chicago&#8217;s south suburb of Blue Island, where he graduated from high\u00a0 school. After high school, he worked at First National Bank in Chicago\u00a0 for 10 years before entering the U.S. Army Air Corp Special Unit in\u00a0 1942. He served in the European Theatre and participated in the Normandy\u00a0 invasion of France during World War II.<\/p>\n<div>After serving in the military, he began studying at North Park College\u00a0 in Chicago and eventually went to North Park Theological Seminary in\u00a0 1948 &#8211; by then, he was serving as pastor of Emmanuel Evangelical\u00a0 Covenant Church in Merrill, Wisconsin. He served at the church from May\u00a0 1947 until retiring in January 1994.<\/p>\n<div>Gustafson finished his seminary education at North Park in 1951 and\u00a0 attended Chicago Divinity School from 1951-55. The Evangelical Covenant\u00a0 Church ordained him at the 1953 Annual Meeting in Minneapolis. While he\u00a0 loved ministry, his war experience still had a profound impact on his\u00a0 life as he logged more than 13,000 flying hours and enjoyed building\u00a0 aircraft as well.<\/p>\n<div>Along with his parents, Joseph and Anna Gustafson, Arthur Gustafson was\u00a0 preceded in death by five sisters, Delia Peterson, Ruth Melin, Hilma\u00a0 Winterfeldt, Helen Gustafson and Elsie Gustafson; and by three brothers,\u00a0 John, Nels and Roy Gustafson. Several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and\u00a0 grand nephews survive Gustafson.<\/p>\n<div>Memorials are being earmarked for The Good Samaritan Fund at The\u00a0 Holmstad.
