{"id":8374,"date":"2004-12-21T18:31:35","date_gmt":"2004-12-21T23:31:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=8374"},"modified":"2011-07-06T08:28:47","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T13:28:47","slug":"4023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2004\/12\/21\/4023\/","title":{"rendered":"Bookstore Raises Nearly $3,000 for Congo Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHICAGO, IL (December 21, 2004)\u00a0 &#8211; Nearly $3,000 has been raised in support of\u00a0 various projects in Congo through efforts of Covenant Bookstore,\u00a0 according to store manager Jeff Lennard.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Customers entering the store, which is located across the street from\u00a0 the North Park University campus, are greeted with signs encouraging\u00a0 them to donate directly to Congo projects or to take advantage of a\u00a0 special &#8220;Congo discount&#8221; promotion that offers an additional discount on\u00a0 store purchases for every dollar customers donate to the Congo effort.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0868.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[8374]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8375\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0868-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0868-300x226.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0868.jpg 442w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The wall behind the cashier station (see accompanying photo) displays a\u00a0 number of Congo project items that customers can support, such as\u00a0 contributing $80 to purchase a hospital bed or as little as a dollar to\u00a0 purchase a packet of seeds for a family to grow food. &#8220;That portion of\u00a0 the promotion has raised $1,964,&#8221; Lennard noted earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<div>The additional discount on store purchases has raised more than $900,\u00a0 Lennard noted, though that total is expected to grow as the promotion\u00a0 continues. The promotional discount works like this: if a customer\u00a0 donates $5 to the Congo effort, the customer receives a five percent\u00a0 discount on all store purchases; for a $10 donation, the discount is\u00a0 matched at ten percent. The percentage of discount increases to a total\u00a0 of 35 percent for a donation of $35 or more. (To see additional photos\u00a0 that explain the program, please see <a href=\"\/cov\/news\/item4022.html\">Covenant\u00a0 Bookstore.<\/a><\/p>\n<div>&#8220;The idea for the Bookstore Congo promotion came from a discussion that\u00a0 Mary Kainovic, Kate Cannon and I had on how we should merchandise the\u00a0 wall space behind the registers for Christmas,&#8221; Lennard explained. &#8220;We\u00a0 discussed how many stores offer &#8216;doorbusters&#8217; to get customers into\u00a0 their stores and how we wanted to address that. The idea came that\u00a0 customers always like a discount, we then discussed how we wanted that\u00a0 discount to work.<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;Mary suggested that some retailers will give customers the opportunity\u00a0 to contribute to a charitable organization at checkout and designate\u00a0 that contribution with some sort of marker (like the paper shoes you\u00a0 often see hanging),&#8221; Lennard continued.\u00a0 &#8220;We all agreed this was a great\u00a0 idea for the &#8216;Congo Project&#8217; and if customers would like to contribute\u00a0 to the project, we would pass that generosity along by discounting their\u00a0 entire bookstore purchase for that visit. Everyone was excited about the\u00a0 idea and Kate took over with the merchandising of the wall space behind\u00a0 the counter so it would reflect our campaign.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>The promotion started the day after Thanksgiving and will run through\u00a0 the end of the year. Those interested in supporting the Congo project by\u00a0 purchasing items like hospital beds, infant scales, school supplies and\u00a0 seed packets may request copies of either the <em>Catalog of Congo Needs\u00a0 and Projects<\/em> or the <em>Kids Helping Kids!
