One of his players was Taylor, the\u00a0 only girl competing in the league. Krieger admitted that he was unsure how the girl would fit in with his other players, but\u00a0 the 10-year-old finished the season and was intrigued by her coach and\u00a0 his full-time job. The on-the-field interaction has led to something off\u00a0 the field that has been life changing.<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;Recently, on a Sunday morning, the phone rang at 9 a.m.,&#8221; said Krieger\u00a0 in a recent article on the Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) web page.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;It was Taylor with the question, &#8216;Coach Krieger, how do I get to\u00a0 church?&#8217;\u00a0 She had her mom drop her off later.\u00a0 That morning, Taylor was\u00a0 one of 13 or 14 people who raised their hands indicating they had\u00a0 committed to follow Christ &#8211; just as the jailor in the morning scripture\u00a0 and message had done. Taylor came back the following week with three\u00a0 friends!<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;Honestly, I didn&#8217;t know what to think about a girl playing tackle\u00a0 football on the team this year,&#8221; Krieger continued. &#8220;God got in my grill and let me know . .\u00a0 . there was a lot more than football going on out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>Youth and young adults are important to ministries throughout the\u00a0 Evangelical Covenant Church, as evidenced by the activities reflected in\u00a0 the more than 250 local church newsletters received each month by\u00a0 Covenant Communications. The following news notes are presented by\u00a0 conference and region.<\/p>\n<div><strong>CENTRAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chicago, Illinois: Edgebrook Covenant Church&#8217;s Desiree Baaken of\u00a0 Maine South High School in Park Ridge was part of a concert tour through\u00a0 her school that performed in New York this fall. Meanwhile, Lane Tech\u00a0 High School&#8217;s Stephanie Hughes finished 10th in the regionally known\u00a0 Sean Earl Loyola Invitational girls high school cross country event in\u00a0 Chicago. She later qualified for the Illinois State Class AA girls cross country championships and finished 32nd overall.<\/li>\n<li>Chicago, Illinois: Ravenswood Evangelical Covenant Church&#8217;s Meghan\u00a0 Hodgkinson was named Most Valuable Player for her Von Steuben High\u00a0 School girls volleyball team.<\/li>\n<li>Stillman Valley, Illinois: Valley Covenant Church students Scott\u00a0 Adams, Travis Bond, Thomas Debnam, Jim Feimster, Matt Flowers, Angie\u00a0 Huber, Joey Smith, Courtney Bond, Bill Clift, Aaron Deets, John Feimster, Sarah Hillis,\u00a0 Carla Huber and Nicole Stukenberg were on the first quarter honor roll\u00a0 at Byron High School. Another student, Bradley Allen Pierson, was\u00a0 presented with his Eagle Scout award as the Boy Scouts of\u00a0 America&#8217;s\u00a0 highest honor in November.<\/li>\n<li>Green Lake, Wisconsin: Around 500 high school students from the\u00a0 Central Conference gathered at an event called &#8220;Rise Up \u2013 Jesustyle\u00a0 2004&#8221; from November 5-7. The speaker for the retreat was Steve Gerali and he told about teenagers\u00a0 in the Bible such as Mary, David and Daniel. Seth Lindberg helped\u00a0 provide worship leading with help from a multitalented band.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>ECCAK<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eagle River, Alaska: Community Covenant Church&#8217;s Club 56 (fifth and\u00a0 sixth grade) youth group purchased 10 turkeys and collected enough food\u00a0 in less than two hours to donate eight Thanksgiving meals to the needy.\u00a0 Others donated more food and eventually 13 food baskets were delivered\u00a0 to families in the area.<\/li>\n<li>Soldotna, Alaska: Alaska Christian College (ACC) reported in a\u00a0 recent email update that the school&#8217;s first official college graduate\u00a0 recently finished his education at North Park University in Chicago and\u00a0 had his commencement ceremony on December 10. Adam London of Arvada\u00a0 Covenant Church in Colorado was a Youth Ministry major at North Park\u00a0 after receiving the Student of the Year Award in the first ACC graduating class 2002. London is set to begin an extended internship back at ACC\u00a0 during the school&#8217;s winter term, serving at ACC&#8217;s admissions office. In\u00a0 other news, ACC president Keith Hamilton said that ACC will be\u00a0 increasing the number of faculty with master&#8217;s degrees. He asked for prayer that two teachers needing additional\u00a0 schooling will be able to find the means to do this over the course of\u00a0 the next three years. ACC is also looking for someone who can assist\u00a0 with summer food service needs. &#8220;Eight teams have committed to\u00a0 volunteering for a week or more this summer. We also need a full team of\u00a0 people to host the visiting groups. Pray for our remaining weeks to be\u00a0 filled with teams,&#8221; added Hamilton. &#8220;We have written a grant to expand\u00a0 our library as it is necessary that we have up to 15,000 volumes by\u00a0 2007, which requires us to expand our current library by up to 2,000\u00a0 square feet. Our dining hall project is on schedule and some building is\u00a0 being done off site even this winter in preparation for teams this\u00a0 summer. We now have 10 buildings on our campus since our original purchase of that first\u00a0 building almost four years ago.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>GREAT LAKES<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jamestown, New York: First Covenant Church youth pastor Dan\u00a0 Soderberg stated that a youth ministry to schools called &#8220;Impact&#8221; has\u00a0 been active in seven local campuses, including five high schools and a\u00a0 pair of middle schools. Dan Nikolich of Zion Covenant Church has been a\u00a0 youth leader heavily involved with the ministry. Soderberg said the\u00a0 groups gather to pray, read scripture and even spend time in worship.\u00a0 Local pastors have also visited campus to speak and service projects\u00a0 have been offered to students. About 300 students are attending and\u00a0 Soderberg added that about one-third have no church affiliation.\u00a0 Students at First Covenant serving as chapter leaders include Courtney\u00a0 Charles, Zach Hnatyszyn, Heather Soderberg and Luke Alport-Cohoon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>MIDSOUTH<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tulsa, Oklahoma: Redeemer Covenant Church&#8217;s John Clark is a starting\u00a0 forward on the Bucknell men&#8217;s basketball team, which has a 5-4 record\u00a0 after nine games. Clark recently scored 11 points in a win over Yale University. John&#8217;s sister\u00a0 Christy was a middle hitter on the University of North Carolina&#8217;s\u00a0 women&#8217;s volleyball team this fall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>MIDWEST<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mason City, Iowa: First Covenant Church&#8217;s Noelle Peterson is a\u00a0 reserve forward for the Truman State University women&#8217;s basketball team,\u00a0 which plays in the NCAA&#8217;s Division II classification and is located in\u00a0 Kirksville, Missouri.<\/li>\n<li>Salina, Kansas: Sean Pietrzyk was a starting defensive player for\u00a0 the Salina South High School football team that recently won the Kansas\u00a0 High School State High School Class 5A football title in Topeka. His\u00a0 team defeated two unbeaten teams en route to the championship. They finished 10-3 overall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>NORTH PACIFIC<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seattle, Washington: First Covenant Church youth coordinator Kirsten\u00a0 Bengston wrote that more than 200 students were part of a North Pacific\u00a0 junior high retreat this fall. The event included games, devotions and a\u00a0 talent show, among other things. The youth group has worked on a\u00a0 modern-day version of the Genesis story of Joseph and his brothers.<\/li>\n<li>Yakima, Washington: Jan Carlson of Wiley Heights Covenant Church was\u00a0 recently accepted to the Yakima Symphony Chorus, singing in performances\u00a0 in November and December at the Capitol Theatre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>NORTHWEST<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mankato, Minnesota: The Evangelical Covenant Church of Mankato\u00a0 recently was part of a junior high fall weekend retreat that included\u00a0 helping an organization called &#8220;Kids Against Hunger&#8221; serve meals to feed\u00a0 7,000 children. The group also went to a Friday night concert. Youth\u00a0 (more than 30 people in all) also participated in its annual &#8220;Rake the\u00a0 Town&#8221; event, raking leaves for their neighbors on a rainy day. The\u00a0 senior high students also participated in a short mission trip to\u00a0 Chicago, learning about different religious groups, social systems and how to evangelize to\u00a0 non-Christians, among other things. They also helped people in a\u00a0 homeless shelter.<\/li>\n<li>Minneapolis, Minnesota: Meta Swanson of Bethlehem Covenant Church\u00a0 was awarded a role with the Lakeville City Ballet&#8217;s 2004 version of\u00a0 &#8220;Nutcracker,&#8221; a traditional Christmas performance held in November. She was part of the\u00a0 Spanish dance ensemble, said a recent newsletter note.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>PACIFIC SOUTHWEST<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tucson, Arizona: Jai Atkielski, youth pastor at the Evangelical\u00a0 Covenant Church of Tucson, stated that youth from his church \u2013 along\u00a0 with help from Cheri Fagan and Bill Foster &#8211; fed the homeless during\u00a0 Thanksgiving season and the group is hosting students from a local high school for a Free Finals Food (FFF) breakfast in\u00a0 December. A building project on the property for an athletic facility\u00a0 includes a volleyball pit and refurbished basketball court.<\/li>\n<li>San Jose, California: The First Covenant Church Youth Volleyball\u00a0 League has been a strong outreach to the local community, said associate\u00a0 pastor Jeff Budd as the most recent season included 60 participants and\u00a0 12 leaders. Currently, the participant total doubles what it was in the\u00a0 spring of 2003. The church recently had a barbecue meal for students and\u00a0 their families after church<\/li>\n<li>Santa Barbara, California: Montecito Covenant Church&#8217;s Andy Aijian,\u00a0 a senior at Bishop Diego High School, was one of 34,000 students\u00a0 nationwide to be named a National Merit Commended Scholar by the 2005 National Merit Scholarship\u00a0 Program.
