{"id":8323,"date":"2004-12-07T17:47:05","date_gmt":"2004-12-07T22:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=8323"},"modified":"2011-07-06T08:28:37","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T13:28:37","slug":"3997","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2004\/12\/07\/3997\/","title":{"rendered":"CHET Graduation Celebrates 15th Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BELL GARDENS, CA (December 7, 2004)\u00a0 &#8211; More than 300 people attended the 2004\u00a0 graduation and 15th year celebration of CHET, the Hispanic Center for\u00a0 Theological Studies, held last Saturday at Primera Iglesia del Pacto.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Ed Delgado, dean and vice president, said that the commencement event\u00a0 included the awarding of degrees to 80 individuals who completed various\u00a0 programs and the installation of CHET&#8217;s first chaplains, Liria and Diego\u00a0 Cerne.<\/p>\n<div>Special guests from the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) included Donn\u00a0 Engebretson, executive vice president; former Pacific Southwest\u00a0 Conference Supt. John C. Notehelfer; Dr. David Mark, Latin American\u00a0 coordinator for the Department of World Mission; Walter Contreras,\u00a0 director of church planting for the Pacific Southwest Conference; and\u00a0 the Dr. Pablo Anabalon, pastor of the Covenant Hispanic church in Eagle\u00a0 Rock.<\/p>\n<div>Also attending and participating in the ceremony was the musical\u00a0 ensemble &#8220;Mi Primer Amor&#8221; (My First Love), composed of young musicians\u00a0 trained by church planting pastor Danny Martinez, a graduate of the CHET\u00a0 Licenciatura program. This ensemble comes from the Iglesia Filadelphia,\u00a0 pastored by another CHET Licenciatura graduate, Alejandro Mendoza.<\/p>\n<div>CHET&#8217;s installation of chaplains was the culmination of a training\u00a0 process that had its roots in the area where the main campus is located.\u00a0 The Cernes are founding members of the Covenant Hispanic church of Eagle\u00a0 Rock and graduates of CHET&#8217;s Ministerial Program. Born in Argentina, they have been married for 51 years and have\u00a0 recently retired from their family owned business that focused on the\u00a0 repair of European automobiles. According to Delgado, more than 200\u00a0 persons made commitments for Christ while having their cars serviced.\u00a0 Anabalon and Contreras officiated in their installation.<\/p>\n<div>The school also honored two board members, Oscar Pierola and Lyle\u00a0 Stokes, for their significant ministry efforts. Pierola was a founding CHET board member\u00a0 and served as board chair for 15 years. Stokes was responsible for\u00a0 facilitating the Endowment Fund for CHET&#8217;s establishment through the\u00a0 sale of First Covenant Church of Los Angeles, participated in CHET&#8217;s\u00a0 founding and development, and was its board secretary for 15 years.<\/p>\n<div>Stokes also was a respected professor of the Book of Revelations and the\u00a0 Gifts of the Spirit at CHET. He and his wife, Rosie, received\u00a0 recognition from CHET President Jorge Maldonado at the event.<\/p>\n<div>CHET (Centro Hispano de Estudios Teol\u00f3gicas) is a theological and\u00a0 pastoral training center for Hispanic church planters, pastors, and lay\u00a0 leaders, having grown from 35 to more than 400 students since 1989. This\u00a0 year&#8217;s class included 40 graduates from CHET&#8217;s Basic Program, 26 from the Family Counseling Program, seven from its\u00a0 Ministerial program, five from the Licenciatura in Christian Ministry\u00a0 program and two from the Covenant External Orientation Program. About 27\u00a0 percent of those being educated at CHET have Covenant backgrounds, said\u00a0 Delgado.
