CHICAGO, IL (December 6, 2004)\u00a0 – A $1 million federal grant will allow Swedish\u00a0 Covenant Hospital (SCH) to upgrade and expand the hospital’s emergency\u00a0 department, the culmination of two years of work with U.S. Sen. Dick\u00a0 Durbin and Rep. Rahm Emanuel, according to Mark Newton, SCH president\u00a0 and CEO.<\/p>\n

Durbin and Emanuel were honored during a celebration at the hospital\u00a0 last week in Galter Medical Pavilion. The federal grant will allow the\u00a0 hospital to pursue the improvements sooner than originally anticipated.\u00a0 “Senator Durbin and Representative Emanuel worked very hard to enable us\u00a0 to bring even better emergency care to our diverse community,” Newton\u00a0 told those assembled. “We are extremely grateful that both officials\u00a0 recognized the need for expanded emergency services in our community.”<\/p>\n
Plans call for groundbreaking next spring, and the facility cannot come\u00a0 any too soon, says Newton, noting that visits to the hospital’s\u00a0 emergency department increased by 31 percent between 2000 and the\u00a0 present, with ambulance runs to the emergency department increasing by\u00a0 130 percent and inpatient admissions up by 48 percent during the same\u00a0 period.<\/p>\n
The project is estimated to cost $6 million. The improvements will\u00a0 expand the “Fast Track” examination and triage spaces, reducing\u00a0 emergency waiting times, increasing the number of exam rooms, doubling\u00a0 the waiting area capacity, providing additional staging for ambulances\u00a0 and enhancing environmental isolation against airborne pathogens in the\u00a0 event of public health threats.<\/p>\n
The funding was included in the Omnibus Appropriations Bill approved by\u00a0 the Senate and the House late last month. President Bush is expected to\u00a0 sign the bill in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

The funding\u00a0 we’re announcing today will help Swedish Covenant build an emergency\u00a0 department that’s equipped to meet the needs of this diverse and growing\u00a0 community.”<\/p>\n
