CHICAGO, IL (December 3, 2004)\u00a0 – More than $7,000 was raised during the “Gifts\u00a0 That Make a Difference” fair trade bazaar conducted recently by\u00a0 Edgebrook Evangelical Covenant Church.<\/p>\n

“It was a huge success,” says Amanda Olson, a North Park Theological\u00a0 Seminary student who is completing her internship at Edgebrook Covenant.\u00a0 Proceeds will be used to benefit a variety of local and international\u00a0 mission organizations and ministries. A key developer of the fair trade\u00a0 bazaar concept is Chris Pokorny, who is a member of Central Conference\u00a0 staff.<\/p>\n
Covenant missionary groups from Chicago and other parts of the world\u00a0 shipped their goods to Edgebrook Covenant to be included in the bazaar.\u00a0 Participating organizations included Covenant Women of Colombia,\u00a0 Covenant missionaries in Mexico, Ecuador, the Central African Republic\u00a0 and ALC Handicrafts of Thailand, as well as fair trade enterprises,\u00a0 interfaith handicraft alliances and social justice organizations.<\/p>\n
“All of the money raised from goods sold was returned directly to the\u00a0 local crafter,” Olson explained. “ALC Handicrafts received enough money\u00a0 to financially support one woman and her family for six months. The\u00a0 additional profits that the church raised – totaling more than $1,300 –\u00a0 were donated to the North Park Friendship Center to help feed and clothe\u00a0 our neighbors.”<\/p>\n
Olson said the fair trade bazaar also serves as a valuable evangelism\u00a0 tool, “bringing countless new people who had never been here before into\u00a0 our church. We praise God for the huge success of this missions and\u00a0 evangelism ministry!”<\/p>\n
