The students decided to attend\u00a0 classes while confined to wheelchairs to help them better understand and\u00a0 appreciate the world of those coping with physical limitations.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>&#8220;It was quite an awakening,&#8221; says Christina Tinglof.\u00a0 &#8220;Quite humbling.\u00a0 Quite humiliating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/1205.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[8277]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8278\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/1205-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/1205-300x217.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/1205.jpg 402w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Tinglof and other members of the &#8220;Spiritual Formation: From Hostility to\u00a0 Hospitality&#8221; class, working in groups, were assigned to research how the\u00a0 church can be more welcoming to people who feel excluded. Tinglof had\u00a0 observed that there is no direct wheelchair access to other areas of the\u00a0 seminary building from the first floor &#8211; the older building does not\u00a0 have an elevator.<\/p>\n<div>However, a transport system is in place as part of the stairwell system\u00a0 that allows handicapped students and faculty to transfer from a\u00a0 wheelchair to a special chair affixed to a motorized track that\u00a0 transports them up and down the different stairways. One challenge is\u00a0 that some wheelchair-bound individuals are unable to lift themselves\u00a0 from their chair to the rail system and back into the wheelchair without\u00a0 assistance.<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;You still have to have someone put you in the wheelchair, &#8220;says\u00a0 Tinglof. &#8220;Someone had to carry my book bag. Someone had to carry my\u00a0 chair.&#8221; She says she found the process to be time-consuming and observed\u00a0 that while people were assisting her, at times they were hindering\u00a0 access by other individuals to the stairs and landings.<\/p>\n<div>The same assisting actions had to be carried out each time she traveled\u00a0 from one floor to the next, she noted. A trip up inevitably meant a trip\u00a0 back down. &#8220;It gave me a sense of hopelessness, of having no control,&#8221;\u00a0 Tinglof says.<\/p>\n<div>Tinglof says her day was made even more difficult when she discovered\u00a0 that the second-floor bathroom was not wheelchair accessible, and the\u00a0 drinking fountains could not be used by someone who is wheelchair-bound.<\/p>\n<div>The seminary building is an older structure. Installation of an elevator\u00a0 has been considered, but retrofitting an elevator as part of an existing\u00a0 older structure also represents a very large expense \u2013 more than $1\u00a0 million by some estimates. In response to the inherent limitations of\u00a0 the building, the seminary seeks to accommodate handicapped students by\u00a0 arranging for their classes to be conducted on the first floor.<\/p>\n<div>Tinglof says she hopes the experience will encourage future discussion\u00a0 on what accommodations can be made. &#8220;This was very new for me,&#8221; says\u00a0 Tinglof. &#8220;I&#8217;ve never worked with handicapped before.
