SANTA ROSA, CA (December 21, 2005)\u00a0 – As winter begins to arrive in Pakistan,\u00a0 nine members of Redwood Covenant Church are in the beleaguered nation to\u00a0 help build shelters for those left homeless by the October 8 earthquake\u00a0 that killed more than 79,000 people.<\/p>\n

Another member has traveled with a team to minister to women.<\/div>\n
An estimated 2.5 million people were left homeless, many of whom have\u00a0 been difficult to reach because they lived in remote mountain areas.\u00a0 News reports quote observers as stating the ground heaved up an\u00a0 estimated eight to ten feet before dropping back down, reflecting the\u00a0 intensity of the earthquake.<\/div>\n
The nine men from Redwood Covenant were scheduled to remain until\u00a0 December 20. They have joined with about 130 other volunteers from\u00a0 around the world to build approximately 40 shelters. The volunteers, who\u00a0 are being flown by helicopter into remote regions, are being\u00a0 enthusiastically welcomed by the residents, says Redwood Covenant team\u00a0 member Brian Lowney, with meals being provided by the residents. The\u00a0 local military commander has assigned a guard to protect them at night.<\/div>\n
The men range in age from 20 to 60. In addition to Lowney, other members\u00a0 of the team are Michael Chamberlain, Andrew Almile, Francisco\u00a0 Henningsen, Mark Rechin, Kyle O’Connor, Les Negley, Scott Selberg, and\u00a0 Dale LePera.<\/div>\n
The group raised $35,000 from sources outside the church to fund the\u00a0 trip, says pastor John Strong. Marmot, a company that manufactures\u00a0 high-end outdoor equipment, supplied the team with clothing, tents and\u00a0 sleeping bags that will be left in Pakistan when the team returns home.\u00a0 Team members also brought additional sums of money to further help their\u00a0 work.<\/div>\n
The men are not the only people from the church to minister in Pakistan.\u00a0 Julie Caldwell traveled with a different ministry team (not from\u00a0 Redwood) to China over the summer, and members traveled to Pakistan\u00a0 following the earthquake. “Nearly every home and business was reduced to\u00a0 rubble,” she wrote in a letter. “Pictures and video footage truly don’t\u00a0 give an accurate picture of the physical destruction.”<\/div>\n
The emotional toll has been even greater than the physical. The team’s\u00a0 Pakistani van driver lost 29 members of his family. A three-story school\u00a0 for girls collapsed – reduced to five feet of rubble – killing\u00a0 approximately 200 girls, one-fourth of the student population. Their\u00a0 bodies still had not been recovered some five weeks after the quake,\u00a0 Caldwell says.<\/div>\n
The team also provided the survivors with books and book bags so their\u00a0 education can continue. “Our team spent three days counseling and\u00a0 playing with these girls,” Caldwell says. “From schoolmaster to student,\u00a0 what began (with some resistance to Americans) turned into incredible\u00a0 gratitude.”<\/div>\n
Caldwell and her team also spent a day in a tent camp that 3,000\u00a0 individuals now call home. The tragedy led to the breakdown of\u00a0 longstanding social barriers. “At this tent camp, we counseled and\u00a0 prayed with 250 women in one setting, Caldwell says. “This is unheard of\u00a0 in this culture, as women are to be in public only with their husbands.”<\/div>\n
Nearly every woman came forward when they were invited to be prayed for,\u00a0 Caldwell says. “Women wept as they shared their stories while we held\u00a0 them in our arms. They held our hands tightly, not wanting to let us leave.”<\/div>\n
