It was only fitting then that they each scored their\u00a0 1,000th point in the same game.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Scoring that many points in a college career is far from an everyday\u00a0 occurrence, so reaching the plateau together made the accomplishment\u00a0 even sweeter, they say.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;It was really amazing reaching my one thousand points with Megan\u00a0 because she has been my best friend since freshman year as well,&#8221; says\u00a0 Young. &#8220;It was an outstanding feeling.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Since Shandrel and I were both freshman, we both have said it was a\u00a0 goal of ours to get it while we were here,&#8221; says Slattery. &#8220;At the\u00a0 beginning of this year we said it would be cool if we could get it the\u00a0 same game because we knew we were only like two points away from each\u00a0 other, and it was a realistic goal this year.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Everyone kept asking us how far away we were, and it was a countdown\u00a0 ever since,&#8221; says Young.<\/div>\n<div>They achieved their goal last Monday against Aurora, when Slattery\u00a0 scored 14 and Young netted nine. &#8220;This is the first time in my\u00a0 30-year-career that two players have accomplished this in the same\u00a0 game,&#8221; says head coach Jack Surridge.<\/div>\n<div>In addition to sharing the scoring mark, both have averaged double\u00a0 figures since their freshman years, are recognized as team leaders and\u00a0 have shared captain duties. Both also have been CCIW All-Conference\u00a0 selections.<\/div>\n<div>Off the court, the similarities continue with each working towards a\u00a0 bachelor&#8217;s degree in exercise science. &#8220;Both are Dean&#8217;s List students\u00a0 who have helped us accomplish Top 25 Academic status as recognized by\u00a0 the Women&#8217;s Basketball Coaches Association,&#8221; says Surridge.<\/div>\n<div>Despite their many similarities and achieving their 1,000-point records\u00a0 together, they reached their goals via different paths. Slattery came to\u00a0 North Park after playing for nationally recognized New Trier High\u00a0 School, a Chicago suburban school in which 98 percent of the students\u00a0 live well above the poverty line and almost all are white. Young grew up\u00a0 in the city of East Moline and attended United Township High School, at\u00a0 which only 60 percent of the students live above the poverty line and\u00a0 the racial makeup is diverse.<\/div>\n<div>Young has played nearly every position on the team depending on its\u00a0 needs. She holds the CCIW record for free throw attempts and free throws\u00a0 made, Surridge says. Slattery has played post and distinguished herself\u00a0 as one of the top rebounders in the league.<\/div>\n<div>Surridge says he is thankful for the opportunity to have coached both\u00a0 players.
