SLOAN, IA (December 12, 2005)\u00a0 – Covenant pastor Richard Moore says he was\u00a0 “dumbfounded” when he learned from a reporter that a local bank and\u00a0 church were not going to set up a fund to help a family burned out of\u00a0 its home. He volunteered the Evangelical Covenant Church.<\/p>\n
According to news reports, 10-year-old Liam Greenstreet awoke to the\u00a0 smell of smoke and then woke up his mother and another person. Although\u00a0 they got out safe after seeing flames coming from the kitchen, a dog and\u00a0 two cats died – two other cats are missing.<\/p>\n
The family didn’t have renters’ insurance – the Red Cross is providing a\u00a0 hotel room for several days to the family.<\/p>\n
Moore says he believes it important to help the family, even if they\u00a0 don’t attend a church. “I don’t care if they’re Covenant, Catholic or Hindu.” The Covenant\u00a0 church will gather food, miscellaneous items and put together a\u00a0 Christmas basket for the family, Moore says. The church will provide\u00a0 presents for Liam and Westwood Community School, where Liam is a fifth\u00a0 grader, also is collecting donations.<\/p>\n
