{"id":8196,"date":"2005-12-05T23:45:49","date_gmt":"2005-12-06T04:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=8196"},"modified":"2011-07-06T08:28:58","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T13:28:58","slug":"4624","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2005\/12\/05\/4624\/","title":{"rendered":"Bomb Explodes, Chaplain Escapes Unharmed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MOSUL, IRAQ (December 5, 2005)\u00a0 &#8211; Evangelical Covenant\u00a0 Church Chaplain Cpt.\u00a0 John Grauer recently escaped unharmed when the armored Humvee he was\u00a0 driving was struck by a roadside bomb known as an improvised explosive\u00a0 device (IED).<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Grauer&#8217;s Humvee was leading three Stryker armored personnel carriers\u00a0 around 7:30 a.m.\u00a0 one morning as part of an effort to assist some of the\u00a0 Iraqi leadership in distributing food and other assistance to Iraqi\u00a0 residents, including children. (To read a brief account of distributing\u00a0 the gifts to children, please see <a href=\"\/cov\/news\/item4623.html\">Big Smiles.)<\/a><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/1193.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[8196]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8197\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/1193-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/1193-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/1193.jpg 402w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;The vehicle I was driving was hit by the blast and the hood of our\u00a0 vehicle was on fire,&#8221; says Grauer. That explosion was followed by\u00a0 several others.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;My first reaction was wow, I can&#8217;t believe we have been hit,&#8221; says\u00a0 Grauer. &#8220;My second reaction was to drive fast and get out of here.\u00a0 Within about 10 seconds the fire on the hood was out, and I drove fast\u00a0 trying to avoid any other IED&#8217;s and to make sure everyone on the vehicle\u00a0 gets to a place of safety.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>No one was injured, and the blasts did not deter the soldiers, Grauer\u00a0 says. &#8220;After driving out of the explosions we continued with our\u00a0 mission. I know that God has his hand of protection on my life, and his\u00a0 hand has been on many of the soldiers in the battalion,&#8221; says Grauer,\u00a0 who serves the 4-23 Battalion.<\/div>\n<div>The IED&#8217;s have become the deadliest weapon against U.S. troops,\u00a0 according to news reports. The explosives are small bombs that are\u00a0 planted in the ground or mixed in roadside debris and usually detonated\u00a0 by remote control.
