HAMILTON, ON (July 13, 2009) \u2013 The new Camp Ministry Initiative<\/a> has sent a traveling team of high school and college students to resource three Covenant camps in Western Canada.

\nThe team is filling roles such as lifeguard, cabin leader and counselor, games leader, small group leader, campfire leader, music leader and other support roles at the various camps. They began serving the camps on June 19 and will continue through August 22.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis team basically is supporting the volunteers and local camp staff in any way they can, and have received training in first aid and CPR as well as other camp-specific training,\u201d says Phil Wright, director of discipleship initiatives for the Canada Conference<\/a> of the Evangelical Covenant Church.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s just one small step towards ensuring good and safe camp programs for our conference, particularly as our camps are looking towards expanding their ministries in the coming years,\u201d Wright adds.<\/p>\n

The students were trained in Minnedosa, Manitoba. Training included leading cabin devotions and first aid skills. Team members also focused on preparing their hearts for the upcoming ministry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis training is important to ensure a successful ministry tour,\u201d says Wright. Jon Drebert, team coordinator, led the training along with other experts. Drebert also meets with the team before it begins its work at each camp.<\/p>\n

The students began their ministry at the Covenant Heights Bible Camp at Clear Lake, Manitoba, in Riding Mountain National Park. Click here<\/a> to see a PDF version of the camp\u2019s brochure.<\/p>\n

From Manitoba they will travel to Kootenay Covenant Bible Camp<\/a>, near Nelson, British Columbia. After their ministry stay there, they will travel to Covenant Bay Bible Camp<\/a> at Pigeon Lake, Alberta. The team will travel by air and bus to get to the camps.<\/p>\n

Team members were required to raise $1,200 to cover training and travel expenses. Students also are receiving a $3,400 honorarium, which is paid bi-weekly.<\/p>\n
