CHICAGO, IL (July 8, 2009) \u2013 Peter Sung has been appointed the new director of church planting in the Department of Church Growth and Evangelism of the Evangelical Covenant Church, it was announced today.
\n
\nIn his current role as associate superintendent of the East Coast Conference, Sung serves as director of church planting and revitalization, a position he has held since May 2008. He will assume his new duties on August 1.<\/p>\n

Sung, 36, replaces David Olson, who in June was elected to serve as executive minister of the department. Sung describes his life passion as one of growing in courageous leadership, cultivating confessional communities, and preaching Jesus as the point of everything in life.<\/p>\n

\"Sung\"“Peter has the perfect experiences for this position,\u201d Olson says. \u201cHe has planted two Covenant churches, both of which remain strong and vital. As director of church planting and revitalization of the East Coast Conference, he has supervised the planting of many new churches and has forged strong relationships with established churches.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeter is intellectually and theologically strong and is deeply committed to the Covenant and its future direction,\u201d Olson adds. “He has rare insight and is a friend of all who meet him. He is one of those leaders who can help our new churches and their pastors minister in an increasingly post-Christian, postmodern and multiethnic world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to his conference work, Sung was involved in planting six churches over a 12-year period. His last two church plants were Highrock Covenant Church in Arlington, Massachusetts, and Queenswest Covenant Church in Long Island City, New York. Sung says he is fond of densely populated cities similar to the area in which he grew up.<\/p>\n

One of four children, Sung and his family came to the United States in 1981. He says as a child he was fascinated by God and the Bible and felt a call to full-time ministry as a freshman in college.<\/p>\n

A graduate of the University of Michigan where he studied English literature, he received his Master of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Reading, exercise, photography, carpentry, and movies are among his many interests.<\/p>\n

He and his wife, Susie, have three daughters – Emelyn, Madelyn, and Sophia \u2013 and are expecting their fourth child in August. They will be relocating from Queens, New York, to Chicago.<\/p>\n
