{"id":7095,"date":"2006-09-06T16:32:39","date_gmt":"2006-09-06T21:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=7095"},"modified":"2011-07-06T08:34:37","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T13:34:37","slug":"5132","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2006\/09\/06\/5132\/","title":{"rendered":"A \u2018Weighty\u2019 Gift to Help School Kids in Congo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IRON MOUNTAIN, MI (September 6, 2006) &#8211; A light competition brought in weighty gains during First Covenant Church\u2019s Vacation Bible School (VBS) when the children raised $876.54 to donate to Covenant World Relief\u2019s \u201cSchool Supplies for Congo Kids\u201d project.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/kids.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[7095]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7097\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/kids.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a>The week in late August featured a boys-versus-girls competition to see who could raise the most money &#8211; judged by the weight. The offering was weighed each evening and by the second night, the girls were ahead by 10 pounds, says Pastor Pete Erickson.<\/p>\n<p>The boys rallied, however, with a dramatic come-from-behind victory that saw them bring in more than 50 pounds of coins on the final night, when 97 children were present. \u201cOne boy brought a sack filled with 3,000 pennies,\u201d Erickson says. \u201cHe could barely carry it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mission board added incentive by pledging to match what was received. In the end, the church raised $1,753.08.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/Leader.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[7095]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7096\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/Leader.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a>Children also had the opportunity to travel back in time, as the church was transformed into a Bethlehem village. The tribes of Israel were divided by age groups, preschool through fifth grade, and children received costumes on opening night that they would wear throughout the VBS week.<\/p>\n<p>Interspersed among games and dramas, the children also ground wheat for bread and made mosaics, perfume and toys.
