MINNEAPOLIS, MN (October 26, 2006) \u2013 Members and visitors were shocked by the greeting they received as they entered the welcome center at the Bloomington Covenant Church recently.

\nThere sat a large pumpkin with the Evangelical Covenant Church logo carved into its side. No one knew who had put it there, but the work was the subject of much animated conversation.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u201cIt was fun\u201d listening to the comments, says Tom Dewey, revealed now for the first time to be the artist.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was carving some pumpkins of the Vikings and the Twins for my grandkids, and I had a pumpkin left over,\u201d Dewey says. \u201cI do a little wood carving, and I\u2019ve done the Covenant logo several times, so I thought I would do it on the pumpkin.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a spur of the moment practical joke kind of thing,\u201d says Dewey. \u201cI did it on Saturday night and slipped it into the narthex on Sunday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taking some liberty with scripture to add humor to the occasion, Dewey crafted this message: \u201cAnd it came to pass that the word of Hezekiah came by voice mail, saying, \u2018Let there be a Narthex Pumpkin placed at the Welcome Center for all to see.\u2019 And after that day, Pumpkin Pie became a Thanksgiving Ebenezer, and was tasted throughout the land forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actual carving went quickly, he says. \u201cI had the image of the logo on my computer. I printed out the size I wanted and taped it on the pumpkin to use as an outline.\u201d Carving the logo on the pumpkin was \u201ca lot easier on the hands\u201d than on the wood, Dewey notes.<\/p>\n
