SAN FRANCISCO, CA (November 20, 2006) \u2013 Matt Nightingale says singing \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d before 70,000 people at Sunday\u2019s San Francisco 49ers game against the Seattle Seahawks wasn\u2019t as nerve-wracking as he thought it would be.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u201cIt was kind of surreal, but it was exciting,\u201d says Nightingale, who is the pastor of music and creative arts at Peninsula Covenant Church in Redwood City. \u201cIt was fun, really thrilling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even more thrilling was being at his first NFL game and watching the 49ers upset the Seahawks 20-14 in a game that went down to the wire. The team also honored legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice during half time.<\/p>\n

Nightingale says friends had repeatedly asked him whether he was nervous about forgetting the words, which he wasn\u2019t \u2013 until a few seconds into the song. \u201cIn the middle of the first phrase, I thought, \u2018Do I know the words?\u2019 But then you\u2019re on autopilot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Words echoing in such a large facility can be a problem for singers, but Nightingale says it didn\u2019t affect him. He was just glad the team let him know that explosions would go off behind him when he sang \u201cand the rockets\u2019 red glare . . .\u201d<\/p>\n

Afterwards, Nightingale says, \u201cIt was a huge relief\u201d to have made it through the song that has been the nemesis of many singers. \u201c(Defensive end) Bryant Young ran over to shake my hand and said I did a good job,\u201d Nightingale says. \u201cHe\u2019s a great Christian guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nightingale was able to visit the press box following the game. \u201cEveryone was so nice,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Nightingale earned the opportunity to sing the anthem when the 49ers held their second annual open auditions. He was one of eight singers chosen from hundreds of applications. Nightingale had to submit a recording of him singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” a cappella, along with a completed application form and a headshot photograph.<\/p>\n
