MCMINNVILLE, OR (June 18, 2009) \u2013 The children of McMinnville Covenant Church<\/a> capped a year of raising money for kids in Colombia with a \u201cgrand finale\u201d Wheel-a-Thon and more than tripled the donations they previously collected.

\nMore than 20 children were sponsored to ride their favorite wheels – including bicycles, scooters, and tricycles – around the church building following the May 31 worship service. Participants rode around the church building through the parking lot as they attempted to complete as many laps as possible, says Anna Carlson, Children\u2019s Ministries Coordinator.<\/p>\n

\"Ride-A-Thon\"\u201cA fund that was about $200 in the middle of May is now at over $650 because of the Wheel-a-Thon,\u201d Carlson says. Click here<\/a> to see additional photos.<\/p>\n

The money will go to the Evangelical Covenant Church\u2019s Children\u2019s Service Project, \u201cHope for Refugee Children<\/a>.\u201d The project\u2019s offering will help provide school supplies, gym clothes, shoes and socks, and Bibles for children whose families have had to leave their homes due to violence provoked by rebel groups.<\/p>\n

Following the worship service, congregants moved outside for their fellowship time so they could cheer for the children. Members of the worship team played music and high school students kept the children hydrated at a water station.<\/p>\n

The water was needed as the temperature was almost 80 degrees \u2013 hot for Oregon, Carlson says. Children rode for more than 30 minutes \u2013 the youngest completing four laps and the oldest more than 20. All of the children received a Popsicle afterward.<\/p>\n

This was the first-ever Wheel-a-Thon at the church and Carlson says, \u201cParents were so excited about it that they\u2019re hoping it becomes an annual event.\u201d<\/p>\n

She adds, \u201cIt is so exciting to see what big things children can do in serving others, and we pray for the children and families that will be blessed by this service project.\u201d<\/p>\n
