WASHINGTON, DC (June 11, 2009) \u2013 An estimated 1.5 million American Christians travel abroad annually on short-term church missions, but research has shown they often are not the life-changing experiences participants hope for themselves – or for the site that has been visited – according to Bread for the World<\/a>.

\nTo change that, Bread announced today its release of \u201cGetting Ready to Come Back,\u201d<\/a> a guide to help churches better prepare for a mission trip, debrief when they return, and continue to advocate for change. The material is designed to supplement other material the church already is using to plan for the trip.<\/p>\n

\"Cover\"The Evangelical Covenant Church<\/a> is one of the supporting partners in the project, notes Gary Cook, Bread\u2019s director of church relations. The denomination has helped to support the project financially and has provided input.<\/p>\n

The resource encourages mission teams to research the political, economic, and social backgrounds as well as other issues related to the countries where they will be ministering. \u201cGetting Ready to Come Back\u201d includes numerous links to helpful information as well as links to websites that describe how a church\u2019s denomination has connected in mission. The format of \u201cGetting Ready to Come Back\u201d<\/a> encourages mission team members to begin each step with independent study and reflection, which will serve as the basis for discussion. Suggestions for prayer also are included.<\/p>\n

The 64-page guide can be purchased for $10 per copy. To make it easier for mission teams to purchase a copy for all participants, a discounted price of $5 each is offered for orders of five or more copies.<\/p>\n

The printed version is spiral bound and sized to be carried in a backpack. It also can be reviewed and downloaded as a PDF.<\/p>\n
